Cold Feet
Ten minutes to go.
James sighed. He had been waiting for this moment since he was about thirteen. He glanced up at the clock again.
Still ten minutes to go.
James twisted his watch between his fingers, willing time to pass by faster. Disappointingly, it didn't work.
James jumped as the room door swung open.
"Stop fidgeting!" Remus snapped as Sirius tried to mess up his hair once again.
"I can't help it! I don't like it PLASTERED to my face!" moaned Sirius, ruffling his hair once again.
He managed to escape from Remus and made his way to James' side. He sat down beside him and grinned.
"Nervous?" Sirius asked.
"Nervous?! PAH! I've never been so god damn nervous!" James laughed.
"AW! Poor Prongs!" Sirius said, shaking James' hair about madly so that it sprung back to its usual wild self.
"ARGH!" Remus growled and began to pull out his own hair. "Mess up anyone's hair bar mines, James' or Lily's!" Remus barked.
Sirius laughed and looked around the room. Against the opposite wall was a long table covered in an array of bottles and dishes. Sirius inconspicuously got up and slinked towards the table. He picked up a bottle, and whilst Remus helped James fix his hair, carefully pried open the top. A sweet, fiery smell floated from the bottle. Sirius lifted the bottle higher. Surely it would be okay if he only had a tiny sip?
"NO SIRIUS!" James and Remus both shouted.
Sirius lowered the bottle and looked at them guiltlessly. "What?"
"I don't want my best man drunk before the wedding!"
"Why not? It will be some speech…oh right, the misses! Gotcha!" Sirius winked and placed the bottle back on the table.
"What's he talking about?" James whispered to Remus.
"To be honest, I don't know what he is talking about most of the time!" Remus glanced up at the clock and then to Sirius. "Come on Padfoot, let's go!" Remus patted James on the back and then walked swiftly out the door.
Sirius smiled cheerily at James. "Don't worry, it'll all be fine!" Sirius gave James a manly hug and then bolted out the door as Remus yelled his name.
James sat back down on the chair. He could hear the clock on the wall ticking away.
Five minutes until he had to go into the church and wait for his beautiful Lily to walk down the isle.
The clocks ticks grew louder and louder. James felt a knot grow in his stomach. Doubt grew rapidly in his mind.
James stood up and ran for the door. He couldn't do it.
"Woah!" Sirius said as James bumped into him in the corridor. "Where are you going?"
"I…" James began to cry.
"There, there. It's okay! Come-on Prongs! You don't want Lil's to see you like this!"
"I can't face her Padfoot!"
Sirius slapped James hard across the face. "Yes you can! SNAP OUT OF IT!" Sirius looked into James' eyes. "Now you will walk into that church and wait for her. When the time comes you will say 'I do' no matter what!"
James wiped his eyes and nodded. "You're right, lets get in there!"
The two of them walked into the church together. Sirius made sure that James couldn't run. They took their places at the front, side by side. The doors at the back of the church opened and Sirius winked at James. Music began to play as the silk white of Lily's dress came through the doorway.
This was it.
Well that's it over...
