Sean pulled up to the super-market and got out. He opened the door to the back seat and picked up his baby girl Sophie. He carried her inside and set her in a cart.
Sophie was 2 years old and Sean's world.
His girlfriend had been killed in a car wreck.
They normally got weird stares from people.
Sean was only 17.
"What an adorable baby girl", a girl said.
"Thank you", he said.
"Where's her mother?" the girl asked.
"She died", Sean said.
"Oh, I'm so sorry", the girl said, "I'm Elizabeth".
"Sean", Sean told her, "This is Sophie".
"I is 2", Sophie said.
Sean smiled and Elizabeth laughed.
"She's so cute", Elizabeth said.
"You pretty", Sophie said.
"Thank you. You're really pretty too", Elizabeth said.
Sophie giggled.
"Bubbly, isn't she?" Sean said.
"Indeed", Elizabeth said, "I'll see you later".
"Yeah", Sean said.
Elizabeth walked off.
Sean took Sophie to the park the next day.
"Sean!" Elizabeth said.
"Oh hey Elizabeth", Sean said. He noticed a little girl with Elizabeth. "Who's this?" Sean asked.
"Oh, this is my daughter Britain", Elizabeth said, "She's 4".
"You look so young", Sean said.
"Pregnant at 13", she said.
"Where's her father?" he asked.
"Left me when he found out", she said.
"Sorry", Sean said.
Britain went to go play with Sophie.
"So…have you got a boyfriend?" Sean asked.
"No", Elizabeth said blushing, "But I'm not looking for anyone right now".
"Oh…well my door is always open. I'll leave every light in the house on for you", Sean said. He stood up and kissed her cheek. He walked over to Sophie. "C'mon Soph. Time to go home", he said.
"But Daddy!" Sophie argued.
"C'mon baby girl", he said picking her up.
A week later, Sean heard a car pull up.
Elizabeth got out of her car and helped Britain out of the car. "I had nowhere else to go", Elizabeth told him with tears in her eyes, "I lost my apartment".
"It's fine. Remember? I told you my door is always open", Sean said.
"Thank you. I see you left every light in the house on for me", Elizabeth said.
"Like I said I would", Sean said. He put his arm around her shoulders and led her inside.
