Ashlynn Cooper walked out from underneath the safety of her porch and into the pouring rain. The black '93 Camero that belonged to her best friend, Ellie, had just pulled up to the curb. Ashlynn ran through the rain, but even in the short distance between the car and her front porch, her shoulder length layered hair was plastered to the back of her neck.

"Hey! Hurry up; we're running late!" her friend exclaimed, tossing a few strands of her long blonde hair behind her shoulder.

"Ok, but do you mind unlocking the door?" Ashlynn asked.

"Oh, sorry!"

Ashlynn waited until she heard the sound of the lock popping up. Then she climbed in, slamming the door behind her. Ellie stepped down on the accelerator and the car shot forward. As they jerked to a stop at the end of the street, Ashlynn clicked her seatbelt into place. She looked out the window, the rain sending rainbows of light into the car from the little bit of sun that wasn't hidden by storm clouds. A bright flash of rigid lightning cascaded down to Earth from the sky, booming thunder that shook the ground following it.

"Any chance you could lighten the rain a little, Ash," Ellie asked, turning the windshield wipers up another notch to keep up with the down pouring rain.

"No, you know what Meg told us. I'm not going to ignore her rules, even though you and Melanie might more often than you should," was Ashlynn's sharp reply.

Ellie rolled her eyes. "What's the good of having a power if we aren't allowed to use it?"

Ash remained silent, almost laughing at the very slight desperation in her friend's voice. She had had that same argument with Meg a thousand times now, Melanie usually siding with her. Each of them had a sort of 'power' and matching amulets given to them at birth. Ash could control whether, rain storms being her specialty. Ellie had the ability to put thoughts into people's minds, but that was it; she couldn't control them or read their original thoughts. Finally, Melanie was able to control different elements, like water and fire. Meg was their mentor, from another generation of Daughters. Until Ash and her friends had met her, they had lived pretty normal lives, ignoring their gifts and trying to be like everyone else. Meg had changed that though. It was hard to believe at first. 'Goddesses?' Ash had asked in complete disbelief. 'You know April Fool's Day is still about a month away.' Once she accepted the title, after a battle with a small group of Followers, she had agreed to the training Meg offered. But, unlike her friends who after learning the truth wanted to flaunt their gifts, Ash tried to use hers as little as possible, at a minimum just when they were with Meg. To her dismay though, the three had had a few more run ins with more Followers once it got out that they were the next generation of Daughters.

"Mel is here already," Ellie said as she pulled the Camero into Meg's driveway. "Just think, if you hadn't taken so long getting ready, trying to impress a certain someone we might see here today, then maybe we could have beaten her," she teased.

Unbuckling, Ashlynn reminded her overly competitive friend for the thousandth time, "Life isn't a competition. Besides, how many times do I have to tell you that I am not at all interested in Sam?"

Sam, Meg's semi attractive nephew, had been left to her care after her sister had died in a car crash about a year ago. He knew about everything that was going on with them from his aunt, so he was around a lot during the 'training sessions'.

"Whatever. Let's get going though. We've already missed 15 minutes," Ellie opened her door and looked back at Ash with a pleading look in her eyes.

Ashlynn shook her head. "No."
