A/N: This is my version of the final scene between Alma and Kanda. It contains many spoilers from about Ch. 189 to 200. It's just their final thoughts plus a kiss because I REALLY wanted them to kiss in the manga :( R&R
P.S. Song that inspired fic is Breathe You In by Kurt Nilsen
Disclaimer: I do not own Man. It belongs to Katsura Hoshino. If I did, Kanda and Alma would have found a way :'(
A Kiss
Yuu Kanda shifted his gaze away from the dying boy. If things were how they should be, his death would mean nothing. Just 580 seconds of loneliness before his
goofy ever present smile returned. But this time was different. Things were not as they should be; somewhere along the path strewn with blood and petals Kanda had
lost a friend, and Alma had lost his soul. "I have to find that person" Kanda's oft repeated mantra clung, strident, to Alma's ears. "If he ever knew" Alma thought "If he
ever knew who I really was, it would kill him" And so Alma promised himself that he would never let Kanda know the truth about whose soul it was the exorcists had
placed in his body. Kanda, cradling Alma to his chest, looked down into the eyes of his fallen comrade his body disintegrating from the weight of the dark matter. It
wasn't enough for the order to torment him during his "life" if one could call if that, they had kept him alive as some half akuma half human abomination, in order to
create more artificial exorcists like himself. Kanda thought back to his days as a test subject with Alma. The distant voice that first echoed through his watery cocoon.
The light burning his eyes upon first opening. The dark blur in the center of his vision that slowly resolved into and image; one he would come to know as Alma. Even
strapped to tables like mad men, even during the painful first days of testing, Alma was always by his side, whether he wanted him there or not. The images in Kanda's
mind shifted now to the worst memory he possessed. That day had been a long time coming. Alma had snapped, slaughtering everyone in the laboratory. Kanda was
next. His first and only friend, the only other second exorcist to live, the only thing holding him back from his despair event horizon had grown to hate him. And so
Kanda ended Alma's life, deciding to live on untill he could find that person, rather than die with him. If he had only known how close he'd come. Kanda was a man of
few words, kind ones even fewer, but Alma always held a special place in his heart. He reminded of someone—someone he couldn't quite put his finger on. A distant
memory, but a lovely one nonetheless. At that moment Alma began to thrash around, wailing in agony as the final stages of the dark matter transformation consumed
him. They both knew he was nearing the end. Alma's temperament had changed since their fight. His face was no longer contorted with anger, but a softer, sadder
expression replaced it. "Don't use the innocence" Alma's hand reached out to touch Kanda's, "Just let me go." Alma's outstretched hand began to crumble and the light
left his eyes. Kanda's breath grew ragged as he wept. A warm light fell on his face and he looked up. A few paces off he saw a vision-the last illusion, that person he
had been searching for, the woman he loved a long time ago, holding hands with the specter of Alma. As realization struck Kanda bent his face down over his friend's
near lifeless body and placed a kiss on his lips. The words "I love you" whispered through the air so softly that he couldn't tell whether it was his voice or Alma's. It
didn't matter. The visions faded. The body turned cold. Kanda knelt still cradling his one and only love.
