Never Mine

A/N: I wrote this ages ago, but never found the opportunity to post it 'til now. I hope you like it! :D

Disclaimers: This is to announce that nothing of this story belongs to me, except maybe for the plot. ;D

Thank God I was nowhere near the stairs when the alarm broke off. The loud noise shocked me off the wooden chair I had been sitting on, and with that came her miserable figure running through the doorway—she pulled me to my feet and began yelling, "You have got to help me!" Something small in the back of my head was whispering, "Ignore her," and yet the bigger voice right in front of me was taking control of my thoughts. I dusted myself properly before facing her with a solemn look and asking, "What's the matter?"

"It's...it's the car. I can't get inside. You have to help me! Please? Can you? Can you?"

I shook my head. This was the third time today. "Of course, dear," I said, with utter disappointment—of course I was ready to take on something bigger. Something near 'monster', if not a real monster confident enough to rack me up after so long already. But yes, we have been left undisturbed for at least a decade since—

No, not again.

"Elena, why did you need to use the car again?" I asked, shifting my mind off monsters.

Elena displayed a confused face at first, but with sheer determination, responded, "I just have to."

I didn't ask any further. I knew exactly what was going on in her mind. But I didn't want to add to those thoughts. I led the way downstairs, fetched the key from living room table where just moments ago I threw it off in exhaustion. I mean, how on earth did regular people put up with medial jobs as fixing cars? It was stupid, I know it was, but I couldn't do anything anymore. I stopped—had to stop—Taming monsters because Elena would be in more danger than she's in already.

I let her sit comfortably behind the wheel and adjusted her seatbelts before I turned on the engine.

"Th-thanks, uhh..." she mumbled. I looked away. And now she can't even remember my name.

Then with a face so helplessly innocent, she asked, "Tell me, why am I here again?"

And for the millionth time I wanted to scream. Hurt her. Kill her. I was so powerless against a force no powers of mine can handle. The powers that ended Magnacat, Moog, Emily, and so many others. And it can't face this...this hopeless ability to forget things so easily.

"Dammit, Elena," I whispered, turning my back on her so she wouldn't see my face. Is this girl even the same one I professed love to? The one whom I promised would be mine forever? "Damn..."

"Zick, what's wrong?"

"Elena?" I looked again. Her eyes recognized me this time. In a flurry of excitement I bent into the window and embraced her. "Elena, I just wish you stay like this."

"Get off me! Who are you?" she cried. She stamped her foot on the gas pedal, and we accelerated backwards off the garage, into the empty evening street. The headlights weren't on; I couldn't see where we were going, and me dangling off the window—

"Stop the car!"

"I don't know how!"

"Elena—"

"Who's Elena? And who are you?"

"Dammit, Elena!" I untangled myself from her arms and slipped off the window. I watched with nothing less than horror as the car bounced off the dead end behind the last house of the street, smoke issuing from the engines, and the girl who was never mine still wearing a bewildered expression as she lay, lifeless, on the driver's seat.

A/N: I know, Alzheimer's doesn't just shift you into and out of your memories that quickly. Meh. Heehee. ;D
