A/N: Another of me Summer Alphabet Challenge stories. I'm finally getting them typed up, there are more coming. The whole canary thing of true, by the way. Enjoy, and please, tell me what you think.
Larry told me a story once, about how coal miners used to take canary's down into the mines with them. If the carbon monoxide levels got too high, the canaries would start dropping down, dead. That was the sign for the miners the get the hell out of there.
Now, this whole thing with Colby, well, it would be highly improbable for him not to have slipped up at some point. The margin for human error is too great. There should have been signs. Which means that we were blind. Blind and stupid.
I should have seen it. There should have been something to give him away. But when I go over things in my head, I can't see it.
Oh, I see things. I see him flirting with Meagan when he thinks no one is looking. I see him joking with David, the pair of them like Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. I see him mocking my math, calling me 'Whiz Kid', but still being the most eager of them to learn. I see the incredulous look on his face when we tell him about the maze, and I remember all the work I put in that day to keep him safe.
All of this, the laughter, the caring, all of it was a lie. But then why is it that when I look for canaries, all I can find are memories of a happier time?
