Bookman sighed. He wasn't the youngest thing ever to live, and he knew he needed to find an heir to the title soon. If the heir wasn't experienced enough when he finally kicked the bucket, then the unseen history would never even be recorded. But Bookmen had to be trained from birth, and Bookman didn't exactly want to settle down. Not that his job would let him anyways.
War. Just another annoying thing to record. Bookman had seen too many of these things to let it faze him. He wandered around the war-ravaged village, storing away every detail. Every noise, every sound, every sight. It was all stored in his head. Along with that unseeming wailing.
Bookman, a little curious, wandered closer to the babe's cry. Pretty soon, a young child came into view. Despite looking to be only a couple of months old, the babe had a shock of red hair. Blood covered the child's right eye, and he couldn't see out of it. Bookman stared at the loud child for a second, contemplating his current situation. This child would die if he left him, and he would disappear from history forever.
Well, Bookman thought, picking up the kid. I need to raise a new bookman anyways…
"What a cute child!" the store's clerk exclaimed. She grabbed a small panda bear stuffed animal and handed it to the child of red hair. "I'll give you this panda for free, since he's so adorable" the woman smiled. Bookman simply watched as the babe simply held the stuffed animal. Then, he shook his head and looked around. He found a small hammer and bought that along with his groceries. If this kid were to become the next Bookman, he would have to get used to the ugly side of life as well as the pleasant.
Once they had reached their hideout for the day, Bookman took the hammer and placed it in the young babe's hand. Then he turned around and got to cooking.
"Panda" Bookman heard a tiny voice from behind. He turned around to see that the baby had spoken his first word. He was holding the panda bear up with his left hand.
"Yes, that thing in your left hand is a panda" Bookman said as he turned back to making their meal. He inwardly sighed of relief. Since he could speak, maybe the child wouldn't go into recluse due to his war background. That gave him hope for the kid's future as next Bookman.
"Panda" the voice became louder and more clear. Once more, Bookman turned around to see that the child had put down the panda bear, and was now pounding the ground with his hammer.
"That would be a hammer" Bookman corrected the child. He went back to cooking.
"Panda, hammer" the child once again caught Bookman's attention. The child looked up at Bookman, and for the first time since he had "adopted" the child, it smiled. It pointed at Bookman and stated "Panda"
Bookman sighed. He pointed to himself and was going to give an introduction, but the child interrupted him. "Panda grandpa!"
Grandpa? Bookman wondered as he gave up and went back to his cooking. He kind of liked the sound of that…
