This is a one shot to the story I never finished. I'm going to attempt to finish it but I don't see that happening.

Five years later….

Kate Shepard stopped trying to be that person for her a long time ago because it didn't take her long into the advancement of their relationship to realize she could never be that person. From the day, they said I do things went downhill. She sat in that cold, emotionless conference room and reflected on the mess that was now her life. How do you love someone so much and so completely but yet it still comes to this? Kate sighed as she signed the divorce papers that would end her life in ways she never imagined possible.

It was five years to the day that she and Emily had first told each other they were in love with the other person and it was five years to the day that they shared that first powerful, incredible kiss that still made Kate shudder just thinking about it but five years from now Kate would remember this as the day she and Emily walked out on each other.

She handed the papers to her lawyer and looked across the hall to another conference room where Emily sat with her own lawyer and with their daughter, Mackenzie. They were to a point where they couldn't be in the same room with each other without hurting one another and that was killing Kate. She loved Emily and that would never change but it just wasn't enough and Kate now saw that it hadn't been enough for a long time. She stood, glancing at the woman that stole her heart many years ago one last time and then she left to go home and pack the rest of her stuff before Emily came back. She was headed back to D.C. with her parents. That was the only other place she had lived other than with Emily and she had never imagined she would go back there once she and Emily got together.

Kate sighed as she walked out of the conference room and headed for the elevators, Emily had given up. Every time she convinced Emily to talk to her they always ended up fighting again. After all these years, Kate never saw it ending like this, not any of it and it was breaking her heart. She walked out with her head held high because she knew she wasn't totally to blame but she had also done her damndest to make things right, some things you just can't fix and this… this was one of those things.
