Shion could always tell when Nezumi was pretending to be asleep and when we was actually asleep.

He didn't know why Nezumi ever pretended to be asleep. After considering it for awhile Shion came to the conclusion that it was just a force of habit more or less; after years of living in the West District, Nezumi always needed to be on guard. However, even though his eyes were closed, it was obvious to Shion that he was awake. Nezumi's body was tense, as if prepared to jump out of bed at the slightest intimation of a threat. He didn't have the gentleness a person had when they were unconscious. He lay in the same spot, utterly quiet, not even snoring or pretending to. He never faced Shion when he pretended to be asleep, either.

Shion found it much more interesting when Nezumi was genuinely asleep, though. He learned Nezumi was the type to roll around every so often. Nezumi was more relaxed than Shion had ever seen him. He did not snore; his chest rose and fell slowly and evenly with each breath he took. His face was soft and free of the usual spite it seemed to carry during the day. He was so relaxed Shion often wondered if he was looking at the same person.

It was weird, he knew, to watch someone while they slept. Who does that? But then again, he didn't really care. He couldn't help it. He liked to think of what Nezumi could be dreaming about; could it be about the forest folk? Or about acting in a new play? Or did he ever dream of Shion? This thought only crossed his mind because Nezumi had recently appeared in his own.

Nezumi shifted a little bit, and Shion quickly turned away, heart thudding. If Nezumi ever caught him watching him like this…

Suddenly, something warm pressed up against his back. Nezumi had rolled over and was now up against Shion. Unsure of whether or not he should move, Shion simply lay there, willing himself to fall asleep quickly.

Before he could, Nezumi spoke. "You're really strange, y'know…watching people sleep…"

"H-how long were you awake?" Shion inquired, taken aback but feeling like he should've known.

"Only a few seconds…" Nezumi mumbled, still oddly groggy with sleep. Since Nezumi always seemed to be on edge, Shion had never seen him so out of it.

"A-ah, okay…well I guess we better go to sleep then, it's late and—"

Quick as a flash, Nezumi turned Shion around and pressed their lips together. The deed was done before Shion even had time to process what happened. Nezumi rolled over again and then murmured, "That was a real goodnight kiss, since you don't seem to know what one is. Good night…"

Shion blinked, then smiled. "Good night, Nezumi."

Nezumi was a mysterious wonder when he was asleep.

But Shion thought he was even more of a wonderful mystery when he was awake.

Just a fluffy Nezushi drabble. :3 I've been wanting to write something serious with them, but I keep wanting to try and make it perfect so it never gets finished. D8
