That damn beauty pageant. Hanna had also hate beauty pageants, but she had to be apart of one because of her father not finding any interest of helping her and her mom pay for college. All she needed to do was something special to impress the judges, so she turned to the first person she had thought of. Well, always thinks of.
Emily Fields. Emily had been helping Hanna for a while now for a dance choreography. Though, it is hard for Hanna to keep up sometimes because she gets distracted by Emily's movements. Well, being "distracted" is just Hanna's way of convincing herself that she wasn't checking out her best friend that she had a huge crush on for some time now. However, the thing that scared Hanna is that she had no clue if Emily reciprocated those feelings at all. Maybe Emily did, but it was all mixed singles it felt to her, Hanna thinks. For example, Emily always glancing down at Hanna's lips when they talk. That could be a sign that she likes me? Hanna always thinks. Or that one time when Emily was acting weird and being angry at something the same day Travis asked Hanna on a date, right in front of her. "Maybe that was jealousy? Or maybe she was having a bad day in general?" Were Hanna's first thoughts.
"We should take a break," Hanna said with both hands on her knees. Emily smiles down at her and tosses a water bottle to her. She catches it quickly and returns a smile to Emily, then walks herself to the bench of the side of the dance room to sit. She looks over to Emily, who was skimming through her phone as it seemed because her right thumb scrolled through the screen rapidly, until she taps on the screen. Music started to play and it wasn't a song that matched the dance or what Hanna expected.
Take my hand, take a breath.
Pull me close and and take one step.
Emily reaches her hand out to Hanna and Hanna just shakes her head. "Nope," She said.
"Come on! We'll be slow," Emily said with a small laugh.
"Why do you even have this song?" Hanna laughs.
"My niece is a big fan of High School Musical 3 so I downloaded it for her when I babysit," Emily said, "Now come on!"
Keep your eyes locked on mine,
And let the music be your guide.
Emily holds Hanna's right hand up with hers and the other resting on Hanna's lower back. There's no doubt that Emily made Hanna's heart pound faster. With one step forward from Emily, Hanna takes one back.
Won't you promise me (now won't you promise me, that you'll never forget)
We'll keep dancing (to keep dancing) wherever we go next
They kept their gaze at each other with each rhythm. Instead of getting lost in the music, they both got lost in each other's eyes. Emily spins Hanna, and Hanna almost trips and falls on Emily but Emily kept her ground and smiles at Hanna who's arms were wrapped around her neck. Their bodies were closer and slowly, the music went away to them even if it was still playing. Hanna glanced down at Emily's thick lips which seems pretty close to hers.
It's like catching lightning the chances of finding someone like you
It's one in a million, the chances of feeling the way we do
The feeling in the room was something Hanna felt like she was waiting for, forever.
And with every step together, we just keep on getting better
So can I have this dance (can I have this dance)
So she closes the gap between them with her lips. In that same second before Emily could react, the sound of the door opens and Emily pulls away then turns her head away from Hanna to see Talia with her head down facing her purse. Hanna takes two steps back from Emily and could just feel her heart drop. "Got it," Talia said with her head up and a hot dog in her hand. Emily smiles weakly at her and said, "I thought we had plans at 6? It's only like, 5:30"
"We do," Talia said, "I just wanted to stop by and see you work your dance magic"
"Um, carry on with your plans," Hanna said. Emily turns to head and faces Hanna. "I have to help my mom with.. Stuff" And with that the blond quickly grabbed her things and walked out the door. She walked out as fast as she could. How stupid of me. Emily would never want me. She shakes her head away hoping the embarrassment she had and the turning feeling in her stomach will go away.
That whole night after Hanna left, she just basically sat on her bed, hugging a pillow with her face buried in it. She didn't know when these feelings started for her best friend, she just knew she felt it. With all the longing looks that had to each other, she had always had a feeling Emily does have feelings for her too. The timing could be nothing more then off. Emily was seeing Talia. A beautiful new worker at the Brew. They aren't official, as Emily says, they just been hanging out and that's it.
Hanna decides to go to the Brew. She was going to surprise Emily and with a hello and hopefully to talk about what had happened the night before. Ezra let her in the kitchen that was for workers only when Hanna convinced him that she needed something from Emily. It wasn't even a lie if you think about it. It was more of a white lie where they aren't even lies. It's just something said that was true but not enough information that was told behind it. In her head, the "something" from Emily is Emily. Emily's saying that she wants to be with Hanna as much as Hanna wanted it too. Hanna wants her kiss. Her hug. Her touch. She wanted everything from Emily. She didn't just like this girl, she loves her.
She gave herself a pep talk before she gained the confidence to walk in. With the confidence bar held up high, she walks in to see something she didn't expect. Emily and Talia's bodies so close together with Talia hands on her waist, looking like Talia was going to kiss Emily. The sound of the door opening seemed to pull Talia and Emily apart, but Hanna had seen enough even if it was for a split second. "S-sorry I-," Hanna loses her words, but her legs did the talking and just ran back out the door.
"Han," She heard Emily calling her name behind her but she kept walking away without turning around. "Hanna, wait!" Emily said as she caught up to Hanna and stopped in front of her.
"What?" Hanna snaps.
"That back there, what you saw-"
"It's doesn't matter, Em," Hanna cuts Emily off with a shrug and a forced smile.
"Hanna, I could see it in your eyes that you're not okay. We need to talk, especially about yesterday," Emily said with her eyes locked with Hanna's. Hanna was slowly getting lost in her gaze but then she could see Talia over Emily's shoulder.
"I have to go," Hanna said, turning her back against Emily then running away once more.
The next two days at school, Hanna did her best to avoid Emily so they don't have to talk at all. She hoped to avoid Emily forever to save herself from embarrassment. Until there was a knock on Hanna's door and to her surprise, Emily stood there in front of her face.
"Your mom let me in," Emily said, walking inside Hanna's room so closing the door on her and running away wouldn't be easy for Hanna this time.
Hanna takes big deep breath in and said, "What are you doing here?"
"I think you might have an idea," Emily said.
The blond sighs and shakes her head as she said, "Okay Emily. I like you. I like you a lot."
Emily takes a step closer to Hanna and pulls the blond closer by her waist. Slowly, she leans in and there was the feeling in Hanna's chest again where her heart was pounding so hard. The space between their faces was so small and the feeling of time stopping was there again. The fact that Hanna didn't move away from Emily gave her confidence that she wasn't going to pull away or run away at all. Emily anxiously presses her lips against Hanna's, and Hanna was quick to response. The kiss was first soft and slow then Emily slowly pulls away, meeting and locking her eyes with Hanna's.
But Hanna wanted more. So she closes the gap between them once again, with her right arm thrown around Emily's neck to deepen the kiss. Emily has a tighter grip on Hanna's hips and has her close enough where there was no space left between there bodies as they stood. The feeling Hanna had now was extraordinary. She had only dreamed of this moment and she wished Emily noticed her feelings.
The kiss slowly ended for a need for air. Their foreheads lays against each other, and they were smiling like idiots to each other.
"But Talia-"
"You over Talia, any day, Han." Emily cuts her off. "Ever since you kissed that night, it was all I could think of. I've always liked you Han, why do you think I agreed to help you for that pageant without hesitation?"
Hanna backs her head away from Emily's so she could see Emily's face better and said, "Em, I have to tell you something. I like, like, like you more than liking you." Aka her failed and nervous way of saying that she loves her. "I don't know when these feelings started, but I just always felt like I wanted you-"
Emily cuts Hanna off with a smile that followed a kiss. They moved their lips together in the perfect rhythm, before Hanna pulls away.
"I wish I told you sooner," Hanna's soft voice said.
"We have each other now," Emily said, getting lost in Hanna's mesmerizing eyes. They seal another kiss and they couldn't help themselves from smiling knowing that at this moment they knew that they have each other.
