Let Her Go

You only need the light when it's burning low

Only need the sun when it starts to snow

Only know you love her when you let her go.

The shining silver rim of the photo frame burns Chin's eyes.

But still he stares.

Her image seems so lost, so worthless.

And still he stares.

Thoughts float aimlessly in his mind, sending shadows of sadness flickering to his brain.

Still he stares.

He remembers that night, the night when everything broke apart. He had a choice. And still he managed to let her go, let her slip away from his grasp. He was holding on by a thread, a sliver of hope. He had tried, how he'd he tried to balance it all out. To make things right. But in a second, the second it took for the bullet to be fired, for the last breath to drift away from her, everything had come crashing back down.

'Malia,' the words hang from his parted lips. 'Malia.' He grabs the frame, clutching it until his knuckles go white with the effort of trying, trying not break down. He needs her. His world, his tiny little world, is turning. It's twisting around, it's pulling him apart.

He's falling.

Falling fast.

You see her when you fall asleep

But never to touch, and never to keep

You loved her too much and you dived to deep.

His fingers hover over the ring on his finger. With each touch the cold metal sends pain radiating through every ounce of his being. He didn't know how much she meant to him until it happened. Until he let her go.

He wishes he could pull her back, mend the string that he was clinging to. But once all is lost, there is no hope. Not for her. Not for him.

Only know you've been high when you're feeling low

Only hate the road when you're missing home

Only know you love her when you let her go.

Chin loosens his grip on the frame, until it is barely with his grasp. He watches, as if in slow motion, as it falls to the floor, shattered glass sliding across the floor. And still she smiles back at him, so innocent.

Only know you love her when you let her go.

And you let her go.
