I may not live to see our glory..

"Alexander? There's a letter for you from South Carolina."

"It's from John Laurens. I'll read it later."

But I will gladly join the fight

"No.. it's not."

And when our children tell our story

"Will you read it?"

They'll tell the story of tonight"On Tuesday, the twenty-seventh, Lieutenant Colonel John Laurens was killed in a gunfight-"

Alexander's eyes widened in disbelief.

"against British troops in South Carolina. These troops had not yet received word from Yorktown that the war was over. He's buried here until his family can send for his remains."

Tears welled up in Alexander's eyes.

No.

"As you may know, Lieutenant Colonel Laurens was engaged in recruiting three thousand men for the first all-black military regiment. The surviving members of this regiment have been returned to theirmasters"

He let out a defeated sight and crumpled the letter he had been writing.

'My dearest, John-'

Alexander tried not to cry. He stood up and gave Philip a kiss on his forehead.

"Alexander, are you alright?"

His wife, his wonderful, beautiful wife was concerned about him. She always was. She always cared for him. Alex let the tears roll. He hadn't deserved John, and he didn't deserve Eliza. Not even a little.

"I have so much work to do."

And with that, Alexander locked himself up in his study.
