Whooooo!
It's time to start on the 8-bit Sonic story!
This will be the canon used for the more obscure Sonic games that weren't on a Genesis.
The first game in this series came out right after the original Sonic 1, and is basically a remake. As with the last one, feel free to find the soundtrack and listen to it while reading. The boss theme is very catchy. Anyways, let's go!
Chapter 1: Green Hill Zone
Yes, this was the first game to reuse the now iconic zone.
"Tumble down rolling hills and splash through the chilling waters in an underground cavern. Bounce on springboards but not on spikes. Ouch!"
-Manual
Ahhh, South Island thought a blue hedgehog as he ran through a tropical landscape. He loved this little island, unpolluted, free, and homey. The spiky speedster would often come here just to run around and to enjoy life, especially if something was getting him down. Then he noticed something odd.
It was a robot. A small one that looked like a ladybug, with a wheel instead of legs. That doesn't belong here thought the hedgie, and he jumped on it. It shattered, and a small animal popped out. That's weird, who would power robots with animals? Guess I'll have to find out.
Running along, he found a box with some rings inside it. He'd found some more earlier as well, but had never seen any that weren't floating in the air. Not that I mind, they're great for an energy boost.
A little later on, the 'hog found a crab robot that tried to shoot him with energy coming out of its claws. Popping it, the now curious hedgehog, went up one of the taller hills in the area to see if he could scope out just what was going on. When he got there, however, he was immediately distracted by another box. Cracking it open, sparks surrounded him. Not sure what they were, but happy that they didn't hurt, the blue blur raced down the hill and shot off the edge of a small dip set into the ground to go flying into the air. Hitting another box which gave him an even bigger boost than the rings did, he promptly landed in a spike bed. However, the sparks seemed to protect him, so he jumped out just in case the stuff wore off. It did. A bee robot shot something at him, but Sonic just raced off, down one hill and up another, clearing a spike pit and a ladybug bot.
Jumping one last spike pit, Sonic rolled through a crab robot, (Quick interlude, this is about where act 1 ends in the actual game, but I'm not bothering with signposts in this story, as the bonus stages do not give out chaos emeralds, so those won't be in this story. On to act two!) and ran a bit more.
Then he tripped and fell into a hole (You can't avoid this, by the way). He fell into a small cave, where there was a new box. Splitting it open, a forcefield surrounded the surprised mammal. Jumping down further into the cavern, the speed demon found a box of rings, and fell down to a pool of water. Yuck. At least it was shallow (One-up in a secret room to the left). Unfortunately, the water got a bit deeper, but it was a small pool, and Sonic got through relatively fearlessly. Smashing a crab bot, he kept going up, found a spring, and was launched outside. Then he found another spring that could launch him out of the canyon that he now found himself in, but there was cave behind it, and Sonic felt like exploring. Dashing in, he stomped on a crab bot, splashed past another, then fell down a small waterfall.
That was when he caught a small sparkle out of the corner of his eye. On a ledge by the pool he had fallen into wasa beautiful blue stone. Liking the look of it, Sonic picked it up and stashed it in his quills.
Making his way back to the surface, the hedgehog passed a totem pole. For no reason in particular, even though he had seen plenty of others like it earlier, he made a face at it, copying the expressions it wore. Then he raced off down a hill, laughing his head off. Launching himself over another gap, he raced across an open plain, over some spike pits, and up a new hill (This is in act three. Fall into the second pit and go right for a 1-up. Use the spring to get back on track).
Seeing an odd looking contraption up ahead, the hedgie went to investigate.
"And what do you think you're doing" boomed a voice.
It was a fat, mustachioed man in some kind of hovercraft.
"Oh hello sir" said Sonic in a fake reporter tone "Would you happen to know anything about the animal-powered robots polluting this fair island."
"Yes, I, the brilliant Dr. Ivo Robotnik created them. I think they give the place a nice aesthetic. As will my factories."
"Gee, I don't think pollution and this place were ever meant to mix. Looks like I'll have to put a stop to this!" and, adjusting his gloves, the hedgehog charged the doctor, sending his hovercraft spinning backwards.
"Oh please, you'll need more than speed to beat me." crowed the scientist "This thing isn't exactly slow." laughing, the mustache man hovered just out of the speedster's reach. Now it was the doctor's turn to charge, scattering Sonic's rings everywhere. They went at it for a while, back and forth, but in the end, hedgehog quills proved more durable than machine-made metal. The doctor flew off yelling "You may have won this time, but next time, I won't be so unprepared."
"Sure ya will" Sonic said to himself. He knew this island like the back of his hand. Next up was the river. He'd find that madman soon enough. That's when he got a good look at the contraption that he had spotted earlier. It was some kind of large capsule. Figuring that it belonged to the doctor, he smashed it. Animals rushed out. Geez, how many animals has this guy captured? Guess I gotta save 'em.
And with a grin, he ran off towards the next part of the island.
Alriiight! Got this started. So, yeah, this series will be a little different from the main classic series, just like its games are. And yeah, these chapters are going to be pretty short because these levels are pretty short. Oh well. See all you lovely folks later. Byeeee!
