Bread

It happens as they're walking though the chaotic jumble of street during one of their sporadic breaks. This wasn't something that happened gradually like a carefully planned out infiltration mission, it was an all out surprise attack. Naruto style.

"Hey, lazy, you smell that?"

"Which one? There's a lot of smells in streets like these."

They're walking close enough so that when she elbows him, it looks as though he's stumbled over one of the pipes sprawled across the ground.

"Funny, smart ass. You know, that, that...delicious smell coming from," she inhales deeply and then she's gusting away, one hand clamped tightly to her companion.

It doesn't take long before they arrive in front of a small bakery.

"Here?"

"Here."

"You could've just told me what it was instead of dragging me here," he grumbles.

She doesn't even have the pity to pretend to contemplate her answer before she responds, "Nah, too troublesome." The last word drawn out mockingly.

He furrows his brows and scowls, irritation oozing from his features and yet he relaxes and a smile slides its way across his face. But she's already diverted her attention to the golden bread stacked before them so she doesn't notice. Her eyes are scrunched up and her brows furrowed and she looks so ridiculous that Shikamaru has to remind himself that it's not a genjustsu of some potential enemies.

He's not usually one to particularly enjoy bread, but seeing Temari like Choji before a BBQ would make even gluten-free Ino want to devour a loaf. Whole.

A short while later, they're ambling away from the bakery with bread she didn't demand but he bought anyway. Temari tears a chunk off the loaf and nudges his hand.

"Thanks."
