Shades of Grey
Disclaimer: Plainly, not mine.
A tiny ficlet that hit me quite suddenly, so it's now a birthday present to me. First fanfic (hurrah!) and not anything earth shattering or original, but I hope you find some enjoyment. May turn into a story if gods and readers will it to be so. Hence, reviews would be ever so loverly!
First, there was light. Light that filters through the shadows of a dense canopy of trees, a rare find on such a dusty, backwater moon. A realization of sunlight that flutters onto a smiling face and twirling, graceful limbs. Later, it's a glimmer in the eyes that gaze at you, if only for a moment, across a wide table and show you things that you have waited so long to see, only you didn't know it until now. A light, a tiny flame, returned.
Then, there was black. Nothing can be seen; nothing should be seen. The colour of eyes when the brightness is covered; painted over as though the light should be thought of as a mistake. A shade that is elementally wrong somehow for what it represents. The black is meant to shut thoughts off, to hide them so that they will not be thought of again.
But in between there are shades of grey. A blurring of light and dark, white and black; an iffy colour to play with because it is so often hard to get it just right. Shade that throws faces into shadow, masking, but never erasing, whatever may be. Grey means walking the fine line between light and dark; a reconciliation of the good and the bad into something new, something that is all your own.
A shade of grey is an angel with a devil's grin and a killer with a ticket back into the light.
