It was that time of year again. The smell of mince pies cooking filled the air. Around every corner there was a massive Christmas tree. And in this castle there were a lot of corners. Selene Vector didn't notice anything except the sorrow and pain this season always held for her now.
She had been young when it happened. She had gone to school at Hogwarts, as had Sam, and they had both wanted to be married there. She had been twenty then, and he twenty one. They were both so happy, certain that they would be spending the rest of their lives together. But how could they have known...
The day of their wedding had dawned clear with bright winter sunshine. She had put on her wedding dress with the help of her best friend, Poppy Pomfrey, and gone down to the Great Hall where Sam stood waiting for her. He grinned when he saw her and she had smiled nervously back.
As they said their vows she noticed how tightly he was holding on to her hand and had glanced across at him. He was pale and was trembling slightly.
Just as Dumbledore asked him if he took her to be his wife he collapsed. She fell to her knees beside him and told him she loved him. He smiled weakly. Blood suddenly spurted from his mouth, all over her gorgeous white dress. People had gasped at the ruin of the expensive dress but Selene couldn't have cared less. He was dying of that she was sure.
She remembered which curse it was. They had studied it in her seventh year. It was the most powerful curse there was and there was absolutely no way of stopping it.
He had died in her arms and a single tear had fallen onto his lips. She kissed it away, got up and went to her room. As she left the Hall she could have sworn she heard a cruel, mocking laugh echo round the corridor.
They had strengthened the wards around the school a couple of weeks after. They had assured everyone that they were as strong as the day the Founders placed them, but Selene always wondered...
Selene pulled herself from the past and wiped a tear from her cheek.
Someday...
