A/N: So this story is a "what-if" story. Kris never went to Camp LaGrange, therefore she never met Matt and Junior and everyone else from the show. Are Junior and Kris soul mates and will they eventually find each other and fall in love? Read on to find out. D
"Waking to Fate"
Kris Furillo
Kristine Furillo woke up early one morning to take in the fresh morning air and see the gorgeous rising sun. Her life had been going quite well and she really enjoyed her life. Her mother was a wonderful woman and a great inspiration to her. She never met her father, but she never really wanted to. Her half-brother Jace was her best friend in the whole world and they did everything together. Even though everything in Kris' life was going smoothly, when she woke up that morning, Kris felt like something was going to change.
She quickly got out of bed and walked down the hall of her small apartment to the kitchen. She found a pale blue robe lying on a kitchen stool and tied it around her waste. She poured water into the coffee maker and it instantly began brewing her morning coffee. She walked to her front door and opened it, only to reveal the paperboy who was about to place the Sunday paper in front of the door. "Thanks, Mike," she said to the paperboy as he placed the paper in her hand. She shut the door behind her and walked back to the kitchen. She grabbed a hair elastic that was lying on the counter and tied her hair into a messy ponytail. Finally when her coffee was finished, she poured it into a mug, grabbed the Sunday paper, walked to the small sofa in her small living room and sat down with her coffee and paper in her hands.
Finally she was able to read the paper. She took a sip from her steaming black coffee and placed it on a coaster on the coffee table. She quickly read the first section of the paper and flipped to the next section. As she was reading the first article, she heard her cell phone ringing in the distance. She jumped up and tried to listen real carefully for where the noise was coming from, since she had no clue where her phone was. She searched in the living room: under the sofa, under the table, behind the pillow, but it wasn't there. She searched in the kitchen but again, it wasn't there. She went into her bedroom and looked there too. She looked under the bed, under her dresser, and under her plush pillows. When the ringing stopped, she jumped on her bed and sighed. When she lay backwards, her shoulder landed on a small hard object under the sheets. When she pulled out the object, she realized it was her cell phone.
She glanced at her missed calls and saw that there were two missed calls. One from the previous night from her friend Janet. And then the other missed call was from her mother. She walked back to the living room and got comfortable on the sofa before she hit the send key, indicating she was calling Barb back.
After one ring, Barb answered the call. "Kris, honey?" she rapidly spoke into the receiver.
"Yeah, what's up mom?" Kris replied.
"Oh thank goodness you called me back. Jace is doing something extremely stupid and I need you to tell him not to," her mother squeaked into the phone.
"What do you mean?" Kris asked, she was becoming increasingly worried about her brother.
"Can you just come over here right now?"
"Where are you?" Kris asked her hysterical mother.
"I'm at my house. Where else would I be?" Barb rudely answered.
"You could have been at Jace's apartment," she defensively replied. "It doesn't matter. I'll be there in ten minutes."
"Thanks," Kris heard her mother say before she hung up the phone. She rushed into her room to get changed into a pair of jeans and maroon spaghetti strapped tank top. She brushed her dark brown hair out and pulled it into a sophisticated ponytail. She applied mascara and the slightest bit of base and lip gloss. She threw on her maroon flip flops and rushed out the door. She slid in the passenger seat of her silver Honda Accord and got prepared for the short five minute drive across town to her mother's house.
Junior Davis
Junior Davis drove over to the rival horse farm in Freemont, California in his silver Porsche. His family farm, Davis Farms, and Raintree Ranch were rivals and very competitive. Yet Junior was best friend's with the co-owner of Raintree: Matt Ritter. He stopped his Porsche on the dirt road in front of the Ritter's home and got out of his expensive car. Junior found his best friend in the stable with all their racehorses. "Hey man. How's it going?" Junior called out across the stable.
Matt started walking toward Junior and said, "Coming to spy on the rival farm, are you?" Matt teasingly greeted his best friend.
"Oh yeah. Because that's what I love to do at 7:30 in the morning," Junior answered.
"Yeah, why are you up so early anyway? You're usually up at eleven o'clock." Matt stopped in front of a stall and checked if there was any hay inside the stall for the horse.
"I don't know. I just feel like something is different today. It's really weird," Junior explained. He woke up with a jolt that morning and felt like he needed to be awake. Like there was something important that was going to happen to him today, but he didn't know what it was.
They started walking out of the stable until one of the horse began violently kicking and neighing and causing a great deal of noise. They stood in front of the stall and stared at the temperamental horse. "What's with this horse anyway? He doesn't seem to behave very well." Junior questioned Matt.
"I don't know. Pablo picked him up at an auction real cheap. But he's pretty violent. He won't let anyone near him. I think we'll have to sell him or something because he's too dangerous," Matt explained. Pablo was Raintree's trainer and a great friend to the Ritter family. Both Junior and Matt stared at the horse and then they looked at the nameplate on the stall door which read, Wildfire.
Kris Furillo
Within 6 minutes, Kris was sitting on her mother's sofa staring at her mother. After Barb didn't say a word to her daughter, Kris said, "So, you called me here why?"
"Jace, he…well, how can I tell you this?" Bar began. She knew how close her children were and she didn't know how to tell Kris this news. Just then, Jace walked through the front door and saw his mom and sister.
"Hey Kris. Did mom tell you I joined the marines?" Jace proudly announced.
Kris was shocked. She didn't know to react to her brother's news. She loved him so much and didn't want him to do something that could hurt him. But she knew that if Jace said he wanted to do something that meant that he really wanted to do it. She couldn't tell him not to join the marines. That would crush him. "Wow, that's really great, Jace," she honestly said after a minute of processing his news.
"Thanks, Kris. Your reaction was so much better than mom's," Jace stated as he stepped in front of Kris and hugged her tightly.
"Kristine, how can you condone this. Your brother is leaving us. He could get hurt," Barb hysterically said, just about to tear up.
Kris hugged her brother a little longer before she pulled away. She turned around and sat back on the sofa, this time with Jace next to her. She held his hand tightly and said, "Mom, I know this is scary. But Jace wants to do this, I can tell. I'm scared that something might happen to him, but I love him and I'll support him a hundred percent. Just, please don't hate him for doing this." She was trying to get her mother to come around and accept that her only son would be leaving her.
Barb no longer could hold her tears back and they began sliding down her cheeks. Jace quickly let go of his sister's hand and sat next to Barb on the love seat. He put his arm around her shoulder and hugged her close to him. "Mom, don't be sad. I'll be fine."
"How do you know that?" Barb forced herself to ask between tears.
"Because I could never leave you and Kris alone. I promise I'll be back soon," Jace promised her. He only wanted to comfort her and it actually started to work.
"You promise?" She saw Jace nod his head slowly and she rested her head on his shoulder. "I'm going to miss my baby boy," Barb cried into his shoulder.
"And I'm gonna miss my big brother. But we all have to part our own ways at some time," Kris chimed in as she rose from her seat and sat on Jace's knee. Barb lifted her head to look at her two children. Then Jace slid his other arm around Kris' waist and brought both women close to him, creating a family hug.
"I'm gonna miss you two so much," Jace said, his own tears falling down as well.
Junior Davis
Junior stood next to Matt at the practice track and watched the horse and jockey speed past them. Matt stopped his stopwatch and looked disappointed. Junior knew that Matt was upset over the not-so-great time that appeared on the stopwatch and he felt sorry for him. Matt worked so hard to make all the horses their best and yet it wasn't enough. He felt like he was letting down everyone at Raintree. Junior placed his hand on Matt's shoulder and tried to comfort him. "Alright, go and cool him off," Matt called to the practice jockey, indicating that he wanted the horse to be cooled off and put back in the stable.
"Hey, they're getting better," Junior tried to console him. Matt just shrugged his shoulders and began walking toward his house. Junior followed him into the house and into the kitchen and sat down at the oak table. "Don't worry about it. You're still a lock to win," Junior again tried to comfort him but he knew he was only making things worse.
Again Matt shrugged his shoulders. He wanted to change the subject, so he said, "Why are you still here anyway? Shouldn't you be working at your own farm?" Matt then rose from his chair and walked to the refrigerator to get the pitcher of lemonade. He got two cups from the cabinet and poured two cups full of lemonade. He then put the pitcher back and walked to the table and handed one cup to Junior.
Junior accepted the lemonade and took a sip of it. He then said, "I don't know why I'm still here. I just feel like I have to be here. Today is really weird." He took another sip from his cup and stared into his hands.
"If you say so," Matt said as he himself took another swig from his drink.
Kris Furillo
"So when do you have to leave?" Kris asked as the three of them ate lunch at Barb's house that day.
"I have to leave tomorrow for training. I have to go to Freemont and then my flight leaves so I can train with the rest of the marines," Jace explained as he bit into his cheese and ham sandwich.
"Do you need a ride to Freemont then?" Kris asked him.
"I was just going to take a cab there since Freemont is two hours away," Jace answered her question through bites.
"Oh no, I'll drive you, Jace," Kris bellowed. For some reason, she felt like she had to drive him. It wasn't that she needed to drive her brother to the marines, but rather that she felt that she needed to go to Freemont.
He wiped his mouth with a napkin and took a long sip form his water bottle. "Kris, don't worry about it. I'll be fine."
"Jace, let your sister drive you," Barb told her son. She still didn't want her son to be leaving, but she felt better knowing that Kris would be taking him there. She would drive him there herself, but she knew that she would never let him leave the car if she drove him.
Jace sighed heavily since he knew that he would have to drive with his little sister. "Fine, Kristine. But I have to leave the house at 6:30 in the morning," he warned her.
"Perfect time."
"Why is it perfect?" Jace questioned. He figured as soon as she heard what time she would have to get up, Kris would immediately back out. But he thought wrong.
"I always get up early. I love the mornings," Kris explained with a smile as she picked up her now empty plate and brought it to the sink. For some reason, she was really happy. She wasn't happy since she would have to say goodbye to her best friend and brother. But she was happy that he would be doing something that he really wanted to do and that she would be going to Freemont. She had never been to Freemont before and she was really glad to be going there. She couldn't wait to get up the next morning so she could embark on the two hour ride to Freemont.
A/N: So I hoped you liked my new story. It was kind of slow but it will pick up. I kinda had to detail what their life is like and stuff. Tell me what you think and if you think I should continue. So please review! Thanks!
