Chapter 1: Walking On One Leg Apiece
Luka felt weak and distraught. He was running on barely 3 hours of sleep. The television buzzed quietly, and there was a cigarette lit in his hand. As he glanced at it, he recalled the time when Abby had come to save him. His house was in shambles and so was his life. Cigarettes, beer, and no sleep. It was starting to feel like déjà vu. Only now she wasn't going to save him. She was gone. He had run away with knives in his chest. But his mind kept going. Shouldn't he be forgiving? Should he look at himself and forgive her because he had made mistakes too?
Abby had told him the truth but he left anyway. Why couldn't he bear to look at her? Did they still love each other? Whatever happened to "as long as you both shall live?" This was too much thought for one man. He smashed the cigarette into the ashtray and picked up the phone.
"Yes Operator, could you direct me to office of Dr. Rick McMahan?"
"Yes, that's the one. Thank you."
"Hi Denise, this is Luka Kovac calling. No, I'm not a former patient. I'd like to schedule an appointment with Dr. McMahan."
The night had been long, but his shirt was smoothed, and his shoes were tied, and his pants cinched. He marched into the doctor's office and took a seat. Though he would appear calm, once bottom hit chair it was impossible to sit still. Salvation was quick to act. "Dr. McMahan will see you now."
"So Dr. Kovac, what brings you to my office?"
"I'm seeking help, some one to talk to. But I don't want any medicine, unless your prescribe sleeping pills."
"I'm sure that can be arranged. Well, go head and get started with your story,"
"I regret to say that I have left my wife."
"Divorce?"
"I left the apartment."
"How long were you married?"
"Months."
"Children?"
"Yes." His voice shook, and he winced.
"Then, why Luka, did you leave her?"
"She started drinking. She cheated on me. She couldn't handle herself. We weren't happy anymore. But I still love her."
"Does she love you?"
"With all her heart."
"What about the drinking?"
"She's sober."
The doctor paused and looked at his patient. "Look at yourself. You've made mistakes too. You drink and smoke. Your in shambles. You need her, and she needs you."
"I was thinking the same thing."
"Then why have you come to me?"
"I can't think it all out on my own. I can't think of how to love her. All I know is that I want her, and my life, and my son back. Because without her, I have nothing, just like I had nothing when I came here."
"Look at me, and tell me, do you want to start over, or do you want to go back to where you walked out?"
"I'm older than 40. There is no starting over."
"Then go back."
Luka looked up at him, his body shaking and eyes watering. "I will. Somehow."
