She didn't usually look for the small details when they were together. She was only trying to focus on getting Mabel undressed but she couldn't help but notice the way her hair tangled around the collar of the sweater just before she pulled it over her head.
"Wendy I-"
"Shh, my brothers'll hear."
Mabel rolled her lips inside her mouth, keeping quiet from then on.
Wendy didn't know exactly how this started. She only vaguely remembers her breakup with Robbie and hanging out with the twins more often as a result. After a while it ended up just being her and Mabel when Dipper started hanging out with that weird kid who talks to himself. It didn't take long for her to notice how Mabel's hips were starting to fill out over the course of a few summers and it certainly didn't take her long to notice the mutual feelings when Mabel forced a kiss the last summer they saw each other before school started.
Wendy tried to focus on Mabel's tank top but kept getting distracted with how her hair looked with the headband discarded on the floor along with all their socks and shoes. The smell didn't help either.
Mabel reached for the first of Wendy's button on the plaid shirt. Her ears poked out from the brown mess that was her hair. Wendy became tempted for a second to turn on a light but stuck to ... whatever she was doing.
She could hear her heart beating in her ears. Her breathing was coming out more and more jagged. She shouldn't have been so nervous. She was the older one. The more experienced one.
So why was it that every time Mabel looked up at her and gave her that stupid, silly, small smile did she almost go into cardiac arrest?
Wendy grabbed Mabel's hands as they reached the last button. She locked eyes with her girlfriend and sat there. Staring at her face and breathing hard.
"What? What did I do?" Mabel whispered.
Wendy ran her fingers up to Mabel's shoulders and grabbed hold of them before bringing them towards her. She leaned her forehead on Mabel's. It was quiet for a while. Their summer was half way through.
Wendy didn't confess why she was so breathless that night.
After a few more summers though, Mabel finally caught on.
