Those who were betrayed
Three days. Three days I have been laying on this hard stonefloor. Well , what do you expect? This is a jail. Why would they treat me like king when I'm nothing but a misfortuned mercenary?
How long are they going to keep me here? I know that they are going to execute me. Why can't they hurry? My back hurts and I'm shivering. Death is not not an bad option when you don't have anything to fight for. Or are they just torturing me? Punishing me for somebody else's crimes?
Except it wasn't just anybody who committed those crimes. It was Griffith. General Griffith who once commanded the Hawks, maybe the most important army in Midland. That name brings me so much memories. I remember those days. He had a dream and we all were willing to give up ours so one man could achieve his. For his dream was more ambitious than ours.
This lasted long, until he came. Gatts. A young mercenary like us. I admired him from the very first moment I saw him. He was at least 6'4, his sword was broad-edged and as long as him. For our amazement he could wield that sword with one hand. Griffith made a bet with him. If he won he could cut a wound on Griffith's body. But if Griffith won, Gatts would join the Hawks. Like we expected, Griffith won So Gatts became one of us.
During those three years he became captain of the Raid Team and most respected officer in the Hawks. In a certain way, maybe even more repected than Griffith. It's no wonder; while Griffith was distant and and always sunken in his thoughts, Gatts was down-to-earth. He never hesitated in battle, it was his element. That's what we admired in him.
But he wasn't happy. One day he just left. I blamed him, because I didn't understand. He said that he wanted to fight for himself. What was the point of fighting for yourself if you don't have a dream? But I soon discovered the reason. Griffith's obsession just grew. It finally destroyed not just his dream but also us. We didn't have anything else. We became bandits, desperetly trying to survive, and at the same time, planning the rescue of Griffith.
One night we were attacked by bunch of bounty hunters. Situation looked desperate, but then Gatts appeared, saving us. He helped us save the Griffith. Everything seemed to be alright, but then something happened. I don't know the details, but it was incindent what ancient myths call the Eclipse. To this day I still don't know what had happened. We found bodies of the Hawks who had taken part in rescue of Griffith. Among them were my friends. Corkus. Pippin. Judeau. Everyone of them dead. Only Griffith's, Gatts' and Caska's bodies weren't found.
After ten years of hiding, the Midlanders finally captured me. I'm the only living officer of the Hawks They told me about Griffith's crimes. He had killed the Queen of Midland and King's brother, Yurius. He even had some minister's daughter kidnapped. For years I lived in lies, thinking that Griffith cared about us. That I didn't waste my life serving him. How blind one can be? Griffith didn't care about Gatts either. Griifith saved his life many times but did it only because he wanted to use Gatts for his own purposes. And Gatts knew it. That's why he left.
I should have left too.
I'll die soon and poeple will forget me. I'm okay with that. Scum like me doesn't deserve to be remembered. I just hope that people will always remember my mistakes. If there would be only more people like Gatts. He didn't have a dream, but at least he fought for himself.
