On the back side of the crescent mountain range, hidden between its snowcapped infant peeks and the black swampland lands of a marsh sat a forbidden black stained lifeless land with no name. It was a land with air thick with the stench of rout, a weak willed breeze sounding like the moaning of dying men. The sky matched the lifeless land below it, black with smoke and the stench of indescribable rout.

It was a land that death roamed freely and life dared not tread

The sound of crinkling leaves was accompanied by the dull thud of foot falls and the foreboding sound of dragging. The snap of a twig forced azure eyes to snap up and watch as a branch fell slowly towards the ground, as if time slowed just to watch the hypnotic twirl. Dismissing the twig, the black cloaked man continued on, ignoring the slowing of time surrounding him and the limp baggage dragging behind him. The bagged left behind a splatter of crimson dots intermixed with stray strands of cream, its owner remaining stock still as the new world dared to darken around them. The man walked on, ignoring the occasional snap of bone underfoot, one of thousands of skeletons dotting the massive dead once-upon-a-time-forest. This forbidden land held no living creatures, be them animal, insect, bird or human; not even nature herself dared to visit the black time capsule of death and misery.

The mist wafted up from the barren land only to dance away from the strangers as if frightened by their presence, never daring to touch the tattered black cloak wrapped around the haunting figure nor did it dare to touch the pale girl being dragged behind. The man dragged his badge forward until the mist was so dense it eagerly formed the faces of tortured souls just to escape the stranger's path. Eventually the black robed man reached a large empty field with a single tree near its circular center, the ancient grass screamed in protest with every step he took. The disfigured tree stood solemnly amongst the brittle grass and withering mist, its branches low and drooping as if grieving for a soul stranded on the river of time. The man stopped barley a dozen paces from the out stretched crescent shaped roots of the tree, as if they wished to cradle something precious. The wind howled through withered branches making branches fall into the embrace of the circular roots. Staring at the three small branches remaining suspended in air over a knot-work of lines and circles carving the old dried up soil in the circle of rotten roots, the figure stepped forward and adjusted his hold on the young woman being dragged after him before carelessly tossing her into the air over the ancient carving.

The teen grunted with the sudden movement but had no time to scream as her body froze above the ancient carving, her golden curls freezing about her head as if she was suspended in a pool of clear water. Ignoring the cry of the wind and trembling of the sixteen year old floating before him, the figure struggled to raise his black sheathed arms, as if a great weight was placed upon their thin frames. The man's black leather gloves trembled like leaves and his arms shook uncontrollably, still eyes as bright as pools of blood glared defiantly down on the still and lifeless knot-work carving. There was no sign of his success until his trembling hands reached about chest level, then the knot-work started to hum ominously, like the sound of a waking monster. Smirking in satisfaction, the crimson eyes glinted triumphantly and with a renewed strength the man's trembling arms pulled themselves higher and higher until the knot-work beneath the girl started to glow a menacing shade of filthy violet touched with black wisps of smoke.

"Awaken spirits of the dead, hear my voice and head my order," the man's voice was low and deep, a darkness that not even the deathly forest could mimic with all its shadows and bones, "with the life of this maiden, bring back to me the one I love. Rin Nohara!" He could hear the furious roaring of the wind, the twisted cries of the knot-work on the ground and the breathless gasp of the young girl before him but it meant nothing if he could not bring back the one he sought. Murky green smoke wafted up from the center of the carving, twisting and spinning as if it were a spindle rising up from the neither world, but upon reaching the spirit medium the smoke flinched back and with a shrill cry of anger and pain it plummeted back into the glowing carving.

His arms dropped back to his sides, his eyes narrowing in thought as he stared blankly at his failed sacrifice, wondering why a child of the Great Spirit speakers would not take the place of the one he loved most. In his mind's eye he could see that girl from so long ago, ebony hair soft as silk, chocolate eyes dancing like sunlight, laughter sounding like bells; the memory was warm and soothing, calming the growing anxiety and anger deep inside. He glared at the failed sacrifice, as if in answer to his look of contempt the teenager convulsed violently as a light filtered from the carving up to pierce her translucent skin. He watched passively as her once sapphire eyes opened to unnatural protrusions and filled with a blinding light of purest sunlight gold, over taking the blue irises and turning them into eerie reptilian yellow. The convulsions stopped, the glow faded, her eyes shrank back to their normal size as a deranged smile spread over her face.

"You'll never find her," the young woman's smile never fell and her voice broke as if the spirit inside was fighting the mortal's girls body to give the voice it so desired to speak with. Still her eyes seemed to glimmer with that strange essence of something not quite human, as if she were a creature from another world.

"Who are you?" He demanded, staring down at the sacrifice in annoyance, he did not plan for another soul to be named the same as the one he loved and so did not plan for the possibility of another soul being sent back instead of the one he desired. How many others in the neither realm shared the same name as the one he desired? How many sacrifices would it take until he brought back the one he sought?

"I am the guardian of death," the woman chuckled, that explained the glowing eyes and other-worldly voice, now he just had to figure out how to kick her out of his sacrifice and get back the soul he wanted. "The soul you seek has already moved on—you will never find her now." Reincarnates were difficult to find even if one had all of their identity information, the difficulty was figuring out whether or not the reincarnated soul was taken to a different country or continent. Sometimes souls can be returned to their family trees but it was pretty rare and with the knowledge that someone would summon back that soul the guardians of death and life would purposefully hide that soul someplace far away they knew the seeker could never reach. Still, that only meant he could find her, it would take time perhaps more than he was willing to admit at the moment but he could still find her. Even if that meant sacrificing the life of the incarnate to awaken the slumbering soul within; he would do whatever it took to bring back his love.

"Watch me," He droned, the woman's face twisted into sadistic pleasure as if pleased with his answer. His crimson eyes narrowed in thought, wondering just what kind of death guardian would be pleased with the stubbornness of a mortal.

"You truly belief that you'll find her?" the woman asked with laughter tinting her rough voice, her smile stretching cruelly across her face, "Life and death stand hand in hand, we've guaranteed her safety. You'll never find her!" her smile slipped off her face as something silver and smooth plunged through her heart and lung, bringing a trickle of blood to her lips and smoothing her heart shaped face into a look of bewildered shock. The guardian and the stranger stared at each other, calculating and thoughtful, wondering what the other would do with the little bit of information provided to the other. The man twisted the blade suddenly and the woman cackled in amusement, never flinching with the pain flaring in her breast.

"Fool!" the woman cackled, laughter echoing out of her, "The Sanbi protects her now! You'll never find her!" The Sanbi was a demon of water, it was supposed to bring life to deserts and storms to seas, it was strong and powerful but it was the third youngest and far from the strongest of its nine siblings. The demons were scattered across the content, they hated each other as much as they hated humans not that foolish mortals didn't think of caging the demons themselves. The Sanbi was the reason his love was killed so young, she was the last child born during a hurricane, which meant she was blessed by the Sanbi and there for could retain all of his power and use it at will. At least, that's what the legends say; her kidnappers failed to take into account that she wasn't born in a port town so she was sacrificed pointlessly.

"I will," he snarled again, lifting the sword and leveling it at her throat, "I will keep my promise! I will not go back on my word!" The woman's expression smoothed out, her glowing eyes narrowing as she stared up at him; with a heavy disappointed sigh the woman turned her glowing orbs towards the black stained clouds over head.

"You will stop at nothing?" the woman asked softly, "Even if she seeks you to be happy? Even if she wishes for you to stop chasing after her?"

"I will do whatever it takes to bring her back!" the man repeated himself impatiently, the woman took in a deep breath and let it out slowly, as if preparing herself for a punishment worse than death.

"There are five fires floating upon a still lake," the woman said softly, her voice filling with affection as she stared up into the surprised, dark orbs of the strange man above her. "There is the red flame, the blue flame, the black flame, the yellow flame and the violet flame. The red and blue flames die long before the spring is born. The yellow flame witnessed the spring's birth but dies soon after. The black flame watches as the spring grows but does nothing to strengthen it before he too dies. It is the violet flame that nurtures and raises the spring, turning the spring into something both loved and feared. The Violet flame protects the spring— though she is not alone." the young possessed woman sighed, as cracks appeared on her face, making her look like a glass doll on the verge of shattering. "There is the lightning wolf, the crimson fox, the twisting shadows and the beautiful poisonous flowers; there is the monstrous bugs and the spirits of balance and one of animals. There are many guardians for the hidden spring—you will not find your love until it is too late. Will you still search for her?"

"I will never give up," the man agreed, memorizing the clue given to him, frowning at its length and absurd symbolism

"...then prepare for war," the woman sighed, closing her eyes in regret, "For at the end, your love shall pass once more."

"She will die?" he asked horrified, his eyes widening, "Again she will die? Can she not survive through even one war?"

"She can survive," the woman murmured thoughtfully, "But not with your influence. Meeting you will only get her kill—" He snarled at that and removed the woman's head, never letting her finish her sentence. The young woman's head floated beside her body, the glow fading from her eyes and trickling down into the carving like tear drops of light. He watched with trembling fists, his silver sword crumbling beside him, as the girl's body slowly crumbled and fell with the glowing dust, mixing together before fading from sight. His love had been reincarnated already, she was living in the shadow of five great mountains with only the last to protect and raise her; she was heavily guarded by the surrounding forest, preventing anyone from finding her easily.

He made a promise to protect her

He made a promise to keep her safe

"I will find you," he swore as he turned and marched away from the body of his sacrifice. "I swear I will protect you, Rin Nohara!"

and awaken you memories in your new body, so that you will truely be alive in this world...
