Just Waiting
He's not stupid, he knows his life is and always will be easier than that of the transhumans. Joshua, Mole, Dix will never be able to 'pass' in wider society, no matter their intelligence and understanding. Alec knows he can pass. He can slide by unnoticed providing they aren't using heat sensors to try and track his kind down.
He knows he's stronger, faster and for the most part more intelligent than ordinary humans. He knows that, when he sets his mind to it, he can acquire knowledge and skill far quicker and with far less effort than humans could ever hope to master.
He has many gifts that he would never deny, never want to be without . . . except . . . maybe . . .
Maybe if he didn't have those gifts, maybe if he wasn't transgenic, he wouldn't be living a life in hiding. He wouldn't have White and his Familiars or Manticore or religious zealots hunting him down and wanting to string him up and literally tear him limb from limb. Maybe he wouldn't be just waiting, knowing that Manticore never really succeeded. He's not that different to all the others who died, who never lived to grow up, whose programming failed, whose genetics betrayed them.
He's just a ticking time-bomb waiting to implode even if all those people hunting him never catch up with him.
He's just waiting for the end, because he's a Transgenic and one thing he knows for sure is that good things don't happen to Transgenics.
