present-day
Mimi sat on the window ledge, looking out at all the people. I wonder if they have someone special, she thought to herself. Looking around, she realized that she had misplaced her needle, and she began the search for it.
the flashback
After Roger left the apartment, Mimi's body crumpled and she sank onto the chair. Her face was streaked with tears, her outfit was mussed, and she was an absolute mess. She was wearing waterproof mascara, but for some reason, she wished she didn't, just so she could have something else to cry about. Before she could think about Roger, she felt a hand on her back. Mimi looked up and saw Angel.
"Honey, he'll come back. I know he will. You don't know how much he's fallen in love with you," Angel soothed.
Mimi's wide brown eyes opened. "Do you really think so?" she asked tentatively. Angel nodded her head knowingly and offered a hand to Mimi.
"Mimi, c'mon. You can't stay like this forever. Let's get you cleaned up."
And hand in hand, they walked to the bathroom.
the present again
Mimi searched the entire apartment until she found the needle. By this time, she had started to shiver a bit, so she picked up the needle and went back to her window seat. She prepared the heroin and brought the needle to a spot that she hadn't recently used. Instead of closing her eyes like she normally did, Mimi kept her eyes open. She wanted to savor every moment. And then she pushed the needle in.
we're in the past
After Angel helped Mimi clean off her face, they walked out of the bathroom and went to sit on the couch.
"Angel?" Mimi asked with a small smile. "Want to go shopping?"
"Of course!" Angel responded jubilantly.
what about now
Mimi's dreams that night were nothing out of the ordinary. She was dancing at the Cat Scratch for a special occasion. Perhaps it was Valentine's Day--Mimi couldn't be sure. In her dream, she entered the balcony as usual. She was dressed in a silver robe that opened to show a revealing sequin-embellished outfit. She walked out onto the main platform and began to slink down the stairs, with the occasional high kick to add drama. When she reached the bottom stage, she writhed around, sometimes collecting a drink or some money. Suddenly, she saw Roger. Her heart sped up, but she had to keep dancing. She went through the motions, acting as she was supposed to. At the end, she returned to her dressing room. As she walked through the door, she saw Roger. He motioned for her to follow, and he led her out onto the balcony in front of an empty stage. She walked toward the railing and felt a push from behind. Then she was flying, flying...
back then was different
Mimi and Angel didn't talk on the way to the plaza. Once they reached the first store, though, Mimi's mouth started and would not have stopped had she not seen a coat that she absolutely had to have. Angel supplied the money, and satisfied with their purchases, they returned to Mimi's apartment.
who knows now
She woke up in a furious sweat. Her breath was shallow and fast-paced. Mimi decided to take a walk to clear her head.
Her feet led her down the familiar dark alley, but her usual vendor was not there.
Suddenly feeling tired, even though she had woken up ten minutes ago, Mimi's head dropped onto her chest. Then her body fell to the ground.
