Hi! I know, it's not an update for What if. I was feeling angsty and this kind of came out of nowhere. It's short, and certainly not happy. With that disclaimer, read. There's another note at the bottom.
"We're not in High School anymore!" Liz cried. "I have a life, a job, someone who loves me and is willing to stay with me. You couldn't do that Max, not then, and not now either."
"You wouldn't let me!" Max shot back painfully. "Or did you forget Kyle, and all the other crap you threw at me?"
"I didn't have a choice!" Liz turned from him. She felt defeated by the whole universe. This was not how her life was supposed to be. She was supposed to live happily ever after and Max was only supposed to be a regretful memory, not a living ghost that came from the past to ruin her carefully constructed life. She'd planned it that way.
After they left for Antar, she'd made a plan for everyday until she could look farther into the future. Then she began to plan the rest of her life. Down to the type of guy she'd be with: everything that Max wasn't, because obviously that didn't work, because the damn real thing was here.
"You always had a choice, Liz. You just didn't want what was offered."
"How dare you." Liz's voice shook. "How dare you come here and tell me that! I gave up everything for you!"
"Except your virginity," Max muttered.
Before Liz realized it, her hand flew across the space between them and slapped Max soundly on the face. "No that would be you, Max. You and that Murdering Whore, Tess!"
"What the hell are you talking about, Liz?"
"Tess, she murdered Alex, Max. She mind warped him while using him to decode that stupid alien book of yours. Then she convinced you all to leave us for your bastard son. " Liz spat before turning around and taking a deep breath. She had to get out there. She clenched her fists tightly as she spun around and walked past max. "We're done Max. We were done the second Tess came."
Max was speechless as Liz breezed past him, slamming the door as she went.
I understand the whole undying love that Max and Liz had for each other, but sometimes I think Liz took him back too easily. This is another supposition that they never got to tell them the truth, and the podsters left. The way I figured Liz would have turned out knowing that she wasn't enough for Max, and that for all he knew, he'd left her with a supposed killer on the loose. (Even worse is knowing he was WITH the killer. ICK!)
