A Kind of Love
Annie should have thought more about it when Aoki was born. Mikasa had this strange urge to protect her loved ones at all costs. It started with Mikasa's younger brother Eren, before Mikasa's obsessive streak worsened once she met Annie and fell head over heels for her. It even intensified as soon as Annie became pregnant. Her actions ranged from starting a ritual of listening to Annie's stomach daily to making sure that Annie crossed the damn street whenever she had to go to the convenience store. With Aoki entering the picture, it was only a matter of time before things turned out of control.
Mikasa was in charge of changing Aoki's diapers, bathing her, making sure she gets a good nap and scheduling the naps the baby was supposed to take. Other duties were so blatantly odd, that Annie lost track of most of them and settled with the ones she could comprehend.
Nesting was what Annie was supposed to do when Aoki was still a growing baby in her stomach. Mikasa was the one who took care of cleaning the bedrooms, scrubbing the kitchen and bathroom clean, as well as making sure all duffel bags were packed in case Annie's water broke. Her methodical actions the moment Annie was in labor were so precise, that Annie had a nagging feeling that her partner planned this all in her head.
Annie couldn't help but regard the dark haired woman with a glare. Her partner was currently on their plush couch, with the infant's body secured over her chest. Aoki's blonde hair lightened due to the sun peering through the window in the living room.
A blue fleece blanket covered her tiny body in her polka dotted jumper. Her head snuggled underneath Mikasa's chin, her pudgy fingers gripped the woman's cotton T-shirt. Mikasa recently had a weeklong business trip out of the country. This was the first time she left the baby for that long. Annie had to calm the woman down when she found her alone in their bedroom, cheeks ridden with fat tears. Annie realized that Mikasa just couldn't help but make sure Aoki was alright. Having your parents killed in front of you at ten years old could do those things.
As Annie drank her coffee near the counter in the kitchen, a quiet smile crept up over her face. Aoki didn't seem to mind her other mother's attention. The eight month old was probably used to Mikasa's scent by now, since she threw a fit anytime Mikasa had to leave for work. It was alright though. Annie preferred someone's unconditional love above anything else.
She noticed that Mikasa's one eye peeked open to check on the baby.
"She's going to grow sick and tired of you when she grows up," Annie said.
Mikasa smiled. "I don't care."
