Kindergarten was a new experience. School in general was a new experience. For the Mad Hatter and the March Hare, they didn't know what their parents got themselves into. But if it wasn't for the sandbox, they wouldn't have ever met.

When it was time for recess all the kindergarteners went out onto the playground to play and socialize. Except for the March Hare. The five year old was sitting in the sandbox making castles and humming to himself. "I like sand. It's squishy." He said to himself before he saw a shadow. The young hare looked up and gasped.

"Hi." The Mad Hatter said with a huge smile before plopping down in the sand. "You like to play with sand, too? Isn't it fun?" The tiny Hatter asked, hoping to make a friend for once.

"It is lots of fun." Hare nodded as he handed his playmate a tiny shovel. "What's your name?" He asked as he adjusted his glasses that seemed too big for his face.

"I'm Mad Melvin Hatter." Hatter said proudly as he scooted closer to the Hare, looking at him with bright blue eyes. "What's yours?"

"March Hare." Hare responded as he folded his hands properly.

"Ohhh, you're a hare! That's cool!" Hatter exclaimed before he pulled out his lunch box.

"Didn't we all already have lunch?" Hare asked as he tilted his head, furrowing his eyebrows at his new friend.

"Shhhhh! I got tea and crumpets! Nobody likes them here!" Hatter huffed as he pressed his index finger against Hare's lips. "We could get in trouble!" He whispered loudly.

Hare giggled as he shook his head. "I like tea and crumpets…."

"You do?!" Hatter widened his bright blue eyes.

Hare nodded.

"Yay! Now I can have tea and crumpets with my new best friend!" Hatter clapped before he placed a crumpet on a plate and handed it to Hare. He smiled as he poured them both a cup of tea, but then he realized something was missing. "Hare… I didn't bring any sugar! Did you bring any sugar?"

"Of course! I always bring…." Hare pulled out a cup that had sugar cubes in it. "….. sugar." He smiled as they both began to enjoy their tea time.

This was exciting. They had each other. They didn't need anybody else. The kids made sure to make tea time part of their routine at the sandbox and by Friday on that first week, they seemed to be inseparable. Meaning they couldn't be separated or split apart. They were like two peas in a pod. Even though they didn't know that the other didn't like peas, but they would learn that in years to come.

It was Friday during recess and the two kindergarteners were leaning against each other as they sipped on their tea and munched on their crumpets. When they were finished, Hatter sat behind Hare and wrapped his arms around him, hugging him from behind.

"Hatter? What are you doing?" Hare asked as he sat there, unsure of what to do. It did make him blush though.

"I love you, Hare. You're my best friend. My mommy told me it's important to tell someone that you love them. So, I love you." Hatter said with a smile as he squeezed Hare closer to him, resting his chin on Hare's shoulder.

Hare smiled and blushed as he allowed Hatter to hold him like that. "I love you, too, Hatter. You're my best friend, too." He said as he turned his head around to face the tiny host.

Of course the young friends didn't understand what they were actually saying. They didn't know that one day their friendship would blossom into something more. The future was the future and they didn't need to worry about it at all, but they were in the present and for now? They did love each other. It was an innocent love for now. The two friends would learn how much they mean to each other. Not now. But someday.
