Anne of Green Gables series belong to Lucy Maud Montgomery. I get no material profit from this fanfic. This piece is a headcanon, set between Anne of Ingleside and Rainbow Valley. For Anne and Gilbert; I tried my best. Thanks for reading.
Lovers Dance When They're Feeling in Love
Anne insisted to go back from a medical congress without using a carriage, that night. She walked casually beside Gilbert, who couldn't stop glancing at this beautiful woman in the soft green dress with a glowing pendant around her white neck. They walked silently, because this subtle, endearing silence felt more special than anything else.
Anne suddenly lifted their clasped hands under the streetlights. Her eyes were sparkling, and Gilbert was dying to stop his pounding heart.
"Let's dance."
Gilbert stunned. "You're kidding me, I suppose?"
"No, darling, let's dance. There's no one on this road because of the rain. Come on, I suppose I remember the song at the yesterday party."
This time Gilbert laughed. "We're not young anymore, Anne."
"So let's dance, and see how young we are in the middle of this old world."
Anne muttered a tone. She pulled Gilbert's hands and they spun awkwardly several times. Gilbert watched the end of the road. The lights were too dim to see anyone passing by. But it was safe, no sounds from person or carriage so far.
"All right," a smile grew on his face, "you asked for it, Anne."
This was an unfamiliar London street, not their Lover's Lane that surrounded by birch and starflowers and wild roses back then in Avonlea. But Gilbert found Anne's hands fitted in his grasp, then he eliminated their distance in one step. Anne smiled at him. Those gray-green eyes looked like a star explosion.
"Because the dance is 'for those who feeling in love'?"
Anne laughed. Gilbert spun her slowly as if they were at a palace ballroom, instead of this wet, half-dark street. His palms pressed against her back softly, and Anne rested her fingers on his shoulder, as if this was the first time they had danced. Flickering streetlights hit the puddles and made them looked like dancing on a silver lake.
Anne's mutterings grew louder, and Gilbert found himself smiling like a fool. If they were on top of the world just now ... If they could fall in love even more deeper than this ...
He spun Anne twice, laughing like the past. Anne leaned her head against Gilbert's shoulder and they hugged silently.
"If my colleagues saw this ..."
"Oh, why do we care? Just tell them we're drunk because of the sky."
"Actually, I was drunk because of you, Anne-girl."
Anne laughed and kissed him. "You couldn't be more romantic, could you, Gilbert?"
