tigriswolf prompted: "I'll turn to share a vision with you and find I'm dreaming." (Denise Levertov)
She stayed underground and listened to the advice Nick had given her all those years ago. "Don't make any decisions a Watcher can follow." That was easy. She changed her mind so frequently, kept her feet moving so fast; she couldn't get a straight vision. Not about her own future.
Pinky stuck by her, made sure no Sniffers could find her and she appreciated it. He wasn't too bad for company. Between the two of them they were never hungry, had a roof over their heads. Hook caught up with them one time, never got a straight answer out of him on how he found them, but it was nice. He bought her pretty things, even offered her a place to settle down. She declined.
She had visions from time to time. Nothing miraculous or significant. Tiny things, that wouldn't have meant anything to anyone, but she'd find herself, turning, excited. Ready to share the world with Nick and remember, a tear falling down her cheek, that he wasn't there to share them with.
She still drew them, in her terrible way, that hadn't gotten any better over the years; only to crumble them up and throw them away. A constant reminder that there wasn't anyone to make fun of the way she drew. Pinky tried one time, but it only made her cry and he hadn't known what to do so he left her alone.
Sometimes she tried to convince herself that if she said it enough it would become true. "It's only a dream, it's only a dream." And she'd wake and Nick would be there with her again.
yoruichiyoshi prompted: you were only a girl then.
Cassie stood there fidgeting, her fingers twisting and untwisting together. "Don't be nervous," Nick whispered from his spot next to her. Cassie's bridemaids chattered softly in front of them.
"I have no idea what's going to happen in there, of course I'm nervous." She huffed, a piece of her beautifully done hair coming loose. "No," she groaned. Nick chuckled. "It's not funny, Nick," Cassie glared, but some of it was lost on how nervous she was.
"Don't worry, please. You look amazing." He brushed the piece of hair off her face and reached into his pocket. "I wasn't sure if I should give this to you or not, but now that it's needed." He clipped the blue butterfly into her hair so that it held the wayward piece. "There now you have something blue."
Cassie smiled, "thanks Nick."
"Anything for you," he grinned.
The music started and the first bridemaid walked through the oak doors. Cassie's hand clamped down on his arm and shook slightly. "C'mon Cas, this is what you've always been waiting for, right?"
She turned to him and smiled sadly. "I always thought it was going to be you."
Nick looked away for a moment before looking at her again. "Yeah...well..."
"I knew it wasn't going to happen. Never had a vision of it but...I hoped...back then."
"You were only a girl then and-" Nick touched her cheek, "I lost my chance."
"Yeah." Cassie's voice reflected both of their regret, "things change and...little girls grow up."
"Into very beautiful women. He's lucky, he better know that." The March began and they took their queue to begin down the aisle. "And I'm lucky," he said just for her, "to be the one walking you down to him."
