My Family Tree

Family history is important. By knowing where you came from, you have a better perspective of life. By knowing more about your family's past, you will be able to appreciate what is normally taken for granted, especially after seeing all the sacrifices your ancestors have made. I, unfortunately, don't have much family to go to for this. I am, however, lucky enough to at least have one grandfather and a father to ask.

My family originated in Spain. At the start of World War I, my great grandparents moved to Italy and my grandma was born making her Italian. Unfortunately, it didn't do much use moving away because my grandma had been born in 1940, in the midst of World War 2 and in the center of one the three Axis Powers. When she turned 18, she moved to Munich, Germany.

My grandfather is German. His uncle had been a Nazi. His father hid Jews in their basement. He was born two years before my grandmother. He is from Munich. My grandparents met as young adults, at a bridge, fighting over a cab to take them to the city. They realized they were heading in the same direction and rode it together. They hit it off pretty well and got married. When my grandpa was offered a better job and life in Guadalajara, Mexico they packed up everything and left Europe. They flew across the ocean for a better life. My grandma was 21 when she was pregnant.

My father was born in 1961, Mexico. He was 25, when he met her. My mother. I don't know much about her, she left when I was born and only came back when I was two to give me a brother who I never got to meet either because my dad couldn't afford to keep us both. She was Greek. That's all I know about her.

Anyway, Dad moved his family to New York before I was born because this is where my mother supposedly lived. I hope not, I don't know what I would do if I ran into her one day. I was born in 2003. I like to call myself a Euro Mexican American.

It's pretty obvious my family is rich in culture. A persons roots and origin is one of the most interesting things to explore. It is a handful, knowing where I came from, but it's worth it. I know a little more about myself. Why I'm the way I am. Why I can do what I can do. I urge everyone to find out a little bit more about their past. It's definitely worth a dig.

Another rewrite? Yes. Not only to this story, but all of them. I most likely will continue to post new chapters, however, in the midst of these rewrites. Read and review, please.
