SHADOWS
When Percy and Annabeth came out of the elevators, my heart stopped, literally. Being a son of Hades can cause that to happen sometimes. Everyone was celebrating, hugging each other. I stayed in the shadows. I couldn't stand to be closer to them. Especially him.
Later, on the Argo II, they were sharing their story, and hearing it all over again feels like living through it all again. I resisted the urge to clap my hands over my ears and run away screaming like a child. Then they twist their fingers together, and the pain was so sharp and sudden, the tears came so fast, burning my eyes. I could feel Jason's eyes on me, and I could feel his sympathy. I don't want his sympathy! But I also know I cant stay around much longer. It's way too painful.
That night, I stood in the dark (duh), watching Annabeth and Percy stand at the rail, gazing at the stars and talking softly. Jason and Frank were talking in hushed tones, and the sound of Hazel's and Piper's swords clanging together rang through the night. Jason caught my eye. He clapped Frank on the shoulder and muttered something to him. Frank nodded and walked towards Hazel and Piper, while Jason made his way towards me. I tensed. I knew where this was headed. He stood in front of me and put his hands awkwardly in his pockets. "Hey" he said. I just stared. "Look Nico-" he began. "Stop" I know I sound rough but I don't care. "I don't want this conversation Jason. I don't want to talk about… I won't talk about Croatia. And I'd prefer if you didn't either. To anybody.
His eyebrows furrowed in concern, and he raised his hand asif to comfort me somehow. But he hesitated and let it drop. "Yeah. Yeah okay." He turned and walked a few steps, but turned around again. "I just- you should know that you aren't judged by us Nico."
I raised an eyebrow. "No?"
"No". he replied firmly. "we are your friends. And the fact that you're…" he took a deep breath. "What I'm trying to say us, Hazel loves you. And Percy...Percy Jackson is a good person. You can clearly see the guy cares for you. Annabeth to.
I don't answer. I hated this. I hated being childish. But I knew I'd burst into tears if I opened my mouth. I already felt them glittering in my eyes, so I stared at the ground.
He sighed again, and this time didn't hesitate to squeeze my shoulder. "Good luck Nico." He walked away. "Jason" I called. He turned, his face a mask of surprise. "What I said in Croatia.. I meant it. I will honor my promise and help you defeat Gaia. But that's all. After that I'm leaving- forever."
Concern and worry washed over his face again, but he nodded slightly. And I melt back into the shadows before anyone can see me cry.
