Emma heard footsteps walking through the sheriff's station and looked up, smiling when she saw Killian looking down at her. "I brought you that cocoa drink you like so much from Granny's and put some cinnamon on myself." Killian smiled, looking at Emma like she was every realm and more.
Emma just started at Killian in awe. What had she done to deserve this? Emma sure as hell knew she was a screwed up person, and she never imagined having someone who cared about her this much. Especially after Neal. After Neal left her in jail, Emma thought she had done something. She worried she would never be enough for anyone to love, and she was in jail because Neal had opened up his eyes wide enough to see that. Sometimes these feelings popped back up here in Storybrooke even though she had people who loved her everywhere. She had Henry, she had her parents, and best of all, she had Killian. Even so, she imagined everyone leaving her. Killian promised he would never leave her, and she knew with all her heart that he never voluntarily would. He was the only one who never left her. Neal left her in jail, August left her at that foster home, hell, even her parents sent her through a portal. To save a kingdom, they let their child grow up alone. Emma had come to peace with it, but that didn't change the fact that it never happened. Killian had almost left her once, but inevitably came straight back with a magic bean. He then helped her track through Neverland to save her son. Seeing Killian look at her like that, she was able to push away a bit of her worries. This was one man who would never leave her. She knew she wasn't worth his love, she knew he deserved so much better than the screwed up Savior, and she was pretty sure he knew it too. Yet he stayed. He never left her, and deep down, she knew he never would.
"What is it love?" Emma had apparently been pulled into her own thoughts and had yet to say anything to Killian.
"Oh, sorry. I guess I was just distracted. Long day." Emma would never in a million years tell him what really kept her up at night and dragged her out of the real world into her head, although she suspected he already knew, "open book" and all.
"The Queens of Darkness are still wreaking havoc on the town. Have you found out what they want?" Killian's brow crinkled as he too buried himself in thought, although he was thinking about something important. Emma had just been sitting wondering childish and improbable thoughts.
"I still have absolutely no idea. In the past, we've sort of been able to get a general idea of what these villains are planning. Now, we have absolutely nothing. Do you think it's because Gold's leading them?"
Killian visibly tensed at the sound of his enemy's name. It wasn't until Emma reached out to slide her thumb over the scar on his cheek that he relaxed.
"Hey, we're not going to let him get to you. I promise you that Killian." His smile reached all the way to his eyes when she said his name. It hadn't been until she started calling him by his given name that she realized how unhappy it made him when she called him his colorful moniker. She had figured that was what he preferred, but Emma now regrets every time she called Killian "Hook." He was so much more than his hook, and she knew that. Calling him Killian just dug into her walls and that had scared her until their trip to the past.
"Emma, love, you're doing it again. You're sure this is just the Queens of Darkness leaving you worn out?" Emma didn't really know how to respond, so she just reached up and captured her lips on his. She could feel Killian smile into their kiss, so she smiled herself.
Then, Killian began to laugh. Emma looked up at him. Did she do something stupid? Is that why he was laughing? Was he laughing at her? Involuntarily, Emma's walls began trying to rebuild themselves.
"What?" She asked defensively. Killian apparently sensed that his laughing worried her so he immediately stopped.
"Nothing," he smiled, his blue eyes dancing with true happiness, "it's just I thought our kissing was just a 'one time thing.'"
This sent Emma into a laughing fit that ended with Killian's lips pressed firmly on hers.
A one time thing indeed.
