As Cato held her hand tightly, he realized there was no point in him to continue fighting. After all, the only reason he volunteered for this sick game was to make sure Clove made it out alive. He had failed her, and now he was stuck in this arena by himself.
Tears slipped over his eyelids, finding their way down his cheeks quickly. He squeezes her hand, begging her to stay with him, to keep her eyes open. She tried so hard, really. Cato knew how much pain she was in by the almost-silent moans leaking from her lips every so often.
She tightened her grip on his hand suddenly, telling him that she can't see, everything went black. A choked sob elicits his mouth, he figured there was nothing he could do to stop it. He tried his hardest to reassure her that everything was fine.
She began to lose hold on him, though he was screaming at her to stay awake. Quietly shushing him, Clove mouthed that she loved him. Though his body was being shaken by his sobs, he managed to say it back to her just before her hand went limp, her eyes losing their light.
Cato leaned down toward her lifeless body, very gently touching his lips to hers for the last time. Behind him, Clove's cannon echoes throughout the arena.
As he stalked off the way Thresh ran, Cato realized that love is watching someone die.
