"In Her Father's Footsteps"

Carter turned to Rachel as the gurney carrying the latest trauma victim was wheeled through County's doors.

"So, are you ready…Dr. Greene?" He asked with a wink.

It took Rachel a moment to respond. Was he really talking to her?

After a minute or so, she pulled herself out of her own thoughts and memories of her late father and nodded in Carter's direction.

As they followed the gurney into the trauma room, Rachel took a minute to gaze around.

A part of her couldn't believe that in a few short years from now, she might be working here. The place she had come to as a child so many times to wait while her father worked to save people's lives.

When she was younger, Rachel would often sit at the admit desk and listen to her father and the other staff working. She would pretend to be doing her homework when what she was really doing was taking everything in.

She didn't know it until she was sixteen and had accidentally caused her baby sister to overdose on ecstasy, but as she raced to get Ella help once she knew something was wrong, she was thinking like a true doctor.

It was only when Rachel watched the doctors who had become like family to her working hard to save Ella's life, did she realize she wanted to follow in her father's footsteps. She was sorry for what she had done and there was really only one way to show it-at least in her mind. She was going to become a doctor and help patients like Ella.

She had made a promise to herself and to God that day. She had promised that no matter what happened, she would try her best to save as many lives as she could.

As Rachel heard Carter's voice register in her mind, she snapped herself out of her thoughts once again.

She forced herself to stay focused on the present and not slip back into the past.

She had heard Carter say something about starting an IV.

A little while later, Rachel watched as the young man they had worked hard to save was brought up to surgery. She prayed he would be all right.

As she stood there long after Carter and everyone else had left, she gazed out of the window and up into the slowly darkening sky.

"Well, Dad, I hope I make you proud. I'm gonna try my best to follow in your footsteps. I love you." With that, Rachel left the trauma room and took a little tour of the place had become her second home nearly sixteen years before.
