The Green On His Tie
He hates the green. He'd never planned on the green and he resents it for being there when he would have been happy with any other colour. Just not green. Green is evil. Green is his family, and jealousy, and envy. Green is proud letters from home and loneliness and self hate spiralling through him until it's all he ever feels.
Green is his cruel reminder that no matter how fierce he is about being different, he is a Black and he belongs to the family who bore him.
He watches the others, from his perch at the end of his table. He watches them laugh and joke and help each other with homework. He watches them date, shy kisses and embraces from behind and easy smiles. He watches them day by day, wishing he were one them, hating them because he wasn't.
His housemates find his disgust amusing.
They call out to him in the common room, "Oi, Black, join us for a drink."
They do it simply to hear his reply, "I'd rather die of thirst, but thanks," and then howl with laughter because they are all idiots and they don't understand that the green they are wearing is tainting them slowly.
He makes his way, day to day, counting out the hours until he can be free. Free of his family, free of Slytherin, free of Green.
Counting out the hours until he can prove to everyone, and maybe himself, that he can be, that he is different from the rest.
Slytherin will not make him. Slytherin will not break him.
Sirius will be more than the green on his tie.
