Author's Note: Takes place between chapters 20 and 21 of "I See The Moon."
A Best Man…Buzz thought as he walked through Bonnie's room. Everything was happening so fast, with Bo's return and now Woody proposing. He wondered if he would have to dress up.
Come to think of it, he wondered what exactly a Best Man did. Flower girls threw flowers. Surely there had to be some other task for a Best Man than just standing by the groom's side. I suppose I could look it up online.
At the end of the bed, he could see Jessie sitting on the floor. Bullseye was splayed out on his stomach, looking blissful as she stroked his corduroy with a red cushioned lint brush. "Yeah, you like that?"
Or he could just ask. Jessie would surely know. Approaching, he said, "Jessie, I have a question."
"I got an answer. Wanna see if they match?" She said, not stopping her brushing.
"What are the duties of a Best Man?"
"Hold the ring and make a toast," she answered. Suddenly, as if she had just realized the question, she jerked up straight, dropping the brush to the floor. She whipped around to look at him. "Why?"
"Oh, well…" Buzz coughed and avoided her eyes. Woody had confided in him and it wasn't his place to go around telling everyone his secret. "N-No real reason…"
Jessie jumped to her feet. "Why?"
"I just…" Blast, he was no good at lying to her. "Um, television?"
Jessie was now in his face, close enough that he could smell her grassy scent. "WHY?" She screamed.
"Okay, okay…" Buzz covered his face with his hand. "You got me. Just don't tell anyone that Woody's…"
She screamed joyously. And shrilly.
Some of the other toys had wandered over to see what was going on. "What's Miss Sugar Rush screaming about?" Potato Head said sourly. He looked startled as Jessie spun around, hat brim in hands as a giant smile split her face. "Uh, is she okay?"
"WOODY'S PROPOSIN'!"
Trixie screamed happily. Jessie screamed back. "Hold the phone!" said Hamm. "Jessie, do you remember years ago when you put us through this before?"
"But this time it's different!"
"How?"
"This time it's for real!" She tugged on Buzz's arm. "Tell 'em, Buzz!"
Buzz sighed. "It's for real," he said reluctantly. Woody was going to kill him. Trixie and Jessie began to scream again as Potato Head yanked out his ears.
On the sofa, Woody was trying to massage Bo's feet but he was looking increasingly aggravated with the sound of every squealing shriek that vibrated out of Bonnie's bedroom and into the living room. "What is going on in there?"
"Don't worry about them, Sugar," said Bo as she wiggled her toes. "I'm sure it's nothing."
