When Mai was a child she had only two dreams: the first was to be strong. She wanted to level mountains with her feet, empty oceans with her fist, and make all who stood before her recognize her strength.
Only, Mai did not have the motivation for it. She possessed the heart but lacked the energy. Early on she realized she was not Ty Lee, no matter how hard she tried to be. So instead she idly flung pens into the posters on her wall. As she grew, those pens turned to real weapons and the posters into her enemies.
Her second goal: Get her prince.
Except, the young Mai was awfully bashful. Really, really, really bashful. And Zuko seemed untouchable, out of reach. Enter Princess Azula. Azula was everything Mai wanted: Strong, Talented, and Beautiful. Most importantly however, she was Zuko's sister. Mai suddenly saw a way she could live her dream. From then on she kept Azula and Ty Lee as close as possible. She put up with Azula's cruel humor, and learned to like, even love it when they grew up. She found entertainment in Ty Lee, although she never admitted it. But, she never got her prince. He left her, choosing his pride over a girl.
Ultimately, she fell short of both her dreams. For a long time after, the royal wondered if she was good at anything. She searched and searched and finally found something. She was great a failing. She discovered this over and over again. Try after try. She was no Ty Lee or an Azula. So eventually she quit trying at all, choosing to sit on the sidelines rather than face the shame of failure.
