Worth the Wait
Spending any time what-so-ever with Nate's ex-wife has never been a goal of Sophie's. And, yet, when she ran into Maggie in the hall of Hardison's mostly empty mansion, she was almost grateful. It would, after all, save her the time and embarrassment of seeking her out to ask the most humiliating question of her life.
"Maggie!" Sophie paused, turning on a heel to face her, a too-sincere smile on her face.
"It's… Sophie… right?" Maggie looked a bit unsure and bit like she didn't really want to know.
Rubbing her suddenly damp palms together, Sophie cleared her throat. "Yes, that's right. Um, hey. Can I ask you a question?"
"So long as it's not what the code to my safe is," Maggie quipped, grinning condescendingly, almost without even meaning to.
"Oh I wouldn't dream of stealing from you. You're practically family." Cringing, Sophie couldn't help but make a mental note to laugh later: the whole exchange was so soap opera, so phony socialite. "See, here's the thing. All those things you said about Nate… to Eliot?"
Maggie's face cleared as she chuckled. "What about them?"
"Well, I've known Nate now, a very long time. And I'm well aware that they could all in some way or another, be applied to him," Sophie said haltingly, not sure how to ask what she wanted to ask. "But, I also know you were married to him for years so you must know what a great guy he really is underneath all of that and so you must have been just playing it up because you knew Nate was listening so-" She stopped, blushing. There were so few things that really embarrassed Sophie but she found her throat closing over the words before she could say them.
Narrowing her eyes, Maggie folded her arms over her chest. "So?"
"So… that last bit? How-how true was- that?" Sophie finally managed, wetting her lips as she looked away.
It took her a moment to realize just what Sophie was asking, before a sly smile pulled at Maggie's lips. "You mean what's he like in bed?"
Sophie's eyes shot to hers. "Yes, something like that," she snapped.
"How long have you been waiting?"
"Ten years," Sophie answered without thinking.
Maggie raised an eyebrow. "Ten years. Well. That's a long time to wait for a man. But I don't think you need to worry. He's worth the wait," she assured lightly, stepping around Sophie and continuing on down the hall as if the conversation hadn't even taken place.
Sophie slowly processed the idea, her lips twitching. "Worth the wait, hmm?" she murmured to herself, heading off in the opposite direction.
