-1Jealousy
She was a Gryffindor, had top marks in every class, and James Potter even let her sit next to him during meals. Her parents couldn't have been more proud. And yet, as she watched Albus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy laugh together over breakfast at the Slytherin table, Rose Weasley couldn't help but feel jealous.
At first, Rose had simply felt shocked. Al had told her that Uncle Harry had asked the Sorting Hat to be placed in Gryffindor, and that was what he would do as well. But after watching the look of disbelief on her cousin's face as the hat yelled, "Slytherin!", Rose decided that asking politely would not work. As soon as the Sorting Hat was stuffed over her head, Rose immediately thought, 'I swear, if you don't put me in Gryffindor, you bloody hat, I will personally rip you into shreds.' In a matter of seconds, Rose was sitting proudly at the Gryffindor table, her innumerable cousins laughing and clapping her on the back.
In the course of the next few weeks Rose began to pity Al. Though her cousin was the center of Hogwarts gossip ( A Potter in Slytherin!) he didn't seem to have very many friends. In fact, as Rose glanced at him from the other side of the dungeon during the Gryffindor-Slytherin Potions class, he seemed almost depressed. She didn't blame him. If she had been sorted into Slytherin, Rose wouldn't know what to do with herself.
Then one day, when Rose was racing toward the Transfiguration classroom, she passed by Albus, Scorpius Malfoy, and a group of Slytherins, all of whom were on the verge of tears from laughing so hard.
"Oh, hey Rosie!" Al had grinned, his eyes shining with laughter. Rose continued to watch as her cousin flourished in Slytherin House. She continued to watch as he became popular among his house mates. She continued to watch as he and Malfoy grew to be best friends. Rose and Albus had always been best friends.
And as she watched Al's progress, Rose began to notice her lack of friends. Sure, James had become nicer after his own brother failed to be sorted in Gryffindor, and Victoire was always ready to talk if she needed advice, but Rose was never comfortable with the kids in her own year. When she thought about it, Rose had never been adept to making friends. She had always counted on Al to make enough friends for the both of them.
As she continued to muse, Rose began to feel very lonely. She became more drawn in, and threw herself into her class work. She became snappish when her Gryffindor cousins tried to talk to her, and she rarely ever saw Al anymore. Hogwarts was not turning out to be what she expected at all.
"ROSIE!" a loud voice suddenly broke through the girl's thoughts. She sitting at the breakfast table beside James, staring into space as she mindlessly chewed on a piece of toast. Turning around, she saw Al looking quite frustrated.
"I've trying to get your attention forever!" he cried, slipping into the seat on her right. "Scor and I are going to the lake after breakfast, and we were wondering if you'd like to come with us. You haven't really met Scorpius, have you?"
Rose shook her head, a look of surprise on her face.
"Please, Rosie," Al added in an undertone. "It's been ages since I've talked with you."
And, for the first time in what seemed like forever, Rose spent the morning with her best friend. She even met his best friend, the infamous Scorpius Malfoy. He wasn't terrible to hang around with, but she would definitely have to take her father's advice and beat him in every test. The boy was much too cocky.
'But that can wait until later,' Rose thought. For now, she was simply happy to have the weight of jealousy off her chest.
