FALLING LEAVES

Chapter 1: Awakening

The trees bounced as the wind whistled through scattering leaves. The world seemed electric as Amélie walked back home, her school books huddled in her arms. It was already getting dark, and Amélie felt the urge to hurry as a gust of leaves danced around her. As she approached her front door she admired the large cackling expression of the pumpkin, flickering its amber eyes at her in the wind. She went inside her cottage and as she slid of her duffle coat, she felt the static air pinching her arms.

She walked into the kitchen, brushing her windswept hair back to see if there was anything to eat. Her hair was long, wheat with streaks of gold and honey. She walked to the fridge and found a "Picking up Heidi from school, back soon. Dinner in fridge. Love Mum x." She opened the fridge and found a plate of risotto which she proceeded to heat up.

Amélie was also quite a private and creative person. Due to this she had a tight-knit group of friends, nerdy but still cool. Some would say she was unsociable, very blunt and to the point. But she had a hidden sweetness that only a few close friends and family knew about. She cherished her alone time and rarely felt lonely, as she filled her time with reading, drawing and watching films with her friends. She also spent a lot of time with her sister, her biggest fan.

As Amélie began to eat, she watched the heavy rain and wind beat against the window. A rumble of thunder vibrated through the cottage and the lights began to flicker. A crash of lightning nearby made her jump. Would her mum and sister be okay out in this storm? "I'd better check on them", she rushed to the phone hanging on the wall but before she could reach it she heard another crash! Closer this time. The phone went dead.

She began to panic, one by one the lights flickered out and dread filled her in the blackness. Suddenly she saw headlights beaming through the streaming windows "That must be them!". She ran to the front door, hoping it was them; as she opened it the lights grew brighter and brighter blinding her. She covered her eyes with her forearm; with a final crash! everything went black.

Amélie opened her eyes; she was in a large bed. Momentarily she felt she had slept late, she tried to remember where she was but couldn't remember anything. Her eyes began to focus and she looked up at the ceiling, she could see elaborate carvings of skylarks and dragonflies within the wooden beams. She could hear water in the distance, a trickle of a gentle river She turned to her side and jumped, a woman asleep in a chair by her side. This woman was fair and slender, with long ashen hair; her clothes were strange; she wore a long velvet dress in shades of olive and sapphire. Amélie tried to speak, but no sound came out "Where am I?" she mouthed.

She looked at the broken sunlight on the walls and on the sleeping woman's cheek. "Come to think of it… who am I?" Amélie looked up and found that the sleeping woman was now glaring at her with bright eyes " You're awake!". "Where am I?" Amélie replied faintly. "You are in house of Elrond, in Rivendell, and it is October 31st" the woman answered. "How long have I been asleep?", "You have been here three days, we found you just outside Rivendell but 3 days ago, you're lucky to be alive! We have healed you with elvish medicine." She began to mumble to herself "but three days after the halfling". "Rivendell? Elven medicine? Halfling?" All words Amélie had never heard before "What on earth are you talking about?!" Amélie asked sharply.

"Come now you must be exhausted, I will draw you a bath and prepare your supper" said the lady, "where are my manners, my name is Imladrien Riverfair, and I am an elf from Rivendell, do you remember who you are?" Amélie thought for a moment and remembered "I am Amélie Defrise" "I know my name!", " imladrien smiled and turned, gracefully gliding out the door. Amélie closed her eyes after a few minutes, overwhelmed with her new environment; and fell asleep.
