He knew what was waiting for him on the other side of the door, and he knew there was no escaping it. He had already played out the scene in his mind. It will be dark when he enters – and quiet. They'll wait till he's closed the door again – trapped himself in the room. Then a beat – about 2 seconds he figures. That's when they'll make their move, jumping out from cover, dropping from above. When are people going to learn jumping out at Eliot Spencer is not a good idea? It's one of those things that never end well. All that is left is to decide the optimal way to reaction – his best plan to minimize the fallout.
He'd considered the avoidance option. Just turn and leave. Eventually, they will figure he's not coming. Of course, there will be a price for that too. Besides, he can't avoid them for ever. Not to mention the fact "run and hide" has never been a card in his deck, no matter what he was facing.
He had stalled as long as he could. Wouldn't do to have them to suspect he was onto them. That would only serve to make everything just that little bit more difficult.
He slipped the key in the lock and opened the door, resisting the reflex to immediately turn on the lights flooding the room. A couple of steps in and he tossed the keys on the table. Close the door – deep breath. Brace yourself.
The lights come on – Parker's voice fills the room. "Happy Birthday Eliot – did we surprise you? Did we?"
Damn Birthdays!
Just a little thing I thought of last night after friends surprised me for my BD. Couldn't help but wonder how my boy would react.
