Chapter One -
There was a flash of blue light.
A sudden wind ran through the stone halls, an impossible wind that breathed into a place that had never seen the light of day. It was deep beneath the earth, and a second later, the wind rose into a sound, a strange, screeching sound that was impossible to describe.
Thud.
A blue box materialized in the middle of the dark room. The howling gradually faded, and the light blinked itself to nothingness, returning the caverns into utter darkness. For a moment, there was silence.
"Let me guess," came a woman's voice from within, dry and sarcastic. "We're on Earth again."
The doors swung open, and an otherworldly light shone from within, one that burned with white fire and pierced through the darkness like a star. The silhouette of a man and a woman could be seen from within, and their voices were heard through the silence.
"It's a bit dark, isn't it?" came another voice, a man's this time.
"Where are we?" said the woman, as they stepped out. The man snapped his fingers and the doors of the mysterious wooden box closed, leaving them in darkness again. There was a moment of quiet, as he fumbled with something in his clothing – and then a high-pitched screech and a flicker of blue light.
"There we go," he smiled, as the metal sconces mounted on the walls sparked to life and began to burn.
"Oh, it's nice here, isn't it?" he said, looking around.
They were standing in the middle of a small room, with solid brick walls and straw scattered about the floor. A small table stood to one side, with a loaf of hardened bread on it, and manacles hung menacingly from the ceiling.
"We're in the middle of a dungeon," sighed the woman.
"That's alright then, we've had worse."
He raised the device that he concealed in his hand and aimed it at the metal grille that blocked the entrance. There was a spark and a whir, and the lock was blasted open. They stepped out into the hallway, which was made of dark and damp stone.
"No libraries 'ere?" asked the woman suspiciously.
"Well…"
"Why can't we ever go someplace nice?"
"We met Agatha Christie," he said, with a touch of defensiveness.
"Yeah, she was a real laugh, being depressed and all," she snapped. "I want to meet some real blokes, everyone in 1926 was all … wonky. Why can't the TARDIS ever go where you want it to go?"
"Hey, watch it, it's not her fault!" he said, sounding insulted now.
"I swear, that machine is trying to kill you, every single time, it sends us into some stupid thing that you've got to fix. Next thing you know, it's going to explode and cause the end of the - "
She was interrupted by a voice from one of the cells, loud and arrogant.
"YOU'RE GOING TO DIE IN HERE!"
The two of them turned in confusion, and saw a … creature … in the cell. It was short and squat with horrifically long ears, deep red eyes and skin the colour of ash. It's head was the wrong size, and weighed horrifically down upon its short neck in a way that should not have been possible.
"What?" said the Doctor, surprised.
"I'M VALEN DRETH! YOU'RE GOING TO DIE IN HERE!"
There was a sudden commotion from up the stairs and three guards and a man in a ridiculously ornate dress ran down the stairs.
"ASASSINS KILLED MY SONS, AND I'M NEXT!" shouted the man, grabbing a hold of the Doctor.
"What?" he blinked. "You're not making any - "
And a moment later, something completely unexpected.
"YOU!" blurted out the old man. "I HAVE SEEN YOU IN MY DREAMS!"
"WHAT?"
