"What the hell is poker, Zabini?"
Draco regrets the question as soon it comes out of his mouth. It's not that he doesn't trust Blaise, he doesn't trust his smile. Blaise is constantly doing this; he seems to come back every year with a new Muggle thing he wants to teach everyone else. What that boy does during his summer holidays, Draco isn't sure he really wants to know.
In Draco's opinion, 'poker' sounds like it could be a type of Muggle disease.
"It's a card game," Blaise explains, still grinning. "It's great."
Draco is even more skeptical at that; he's never really been a big fan of Exploding Snap. He gives Theo, who's sitting beside him, an apprehensive glance. Theo shrugs, giving Draco a smile and pointing his chin towards Blaise, like 'what can you do?' Draco glares at Blaise; he already knows that Blaise is going to suggest a vote. That he'll win. Stupid democracy.
"Fine," Draco says, groaning. "I'll play this 'poker'."
Judging by the look on Blaise's face as he pulls out a deck of cards, he's going to regret this.
…
Something is tingling inside of Draco as he places another Galleon on the table.
"I raise."
He grins at his hand—he has two aces. That should be good, right? He's going to win, no problem. Looking at the pile of coins bidded, he can count four Galleons already laid out in the middle. His family has Galleons, sure, but earning money is always fun. Maybe Blaise has the right idea about this.
Blaise raises an eyebrow at Draco, looking skeptical.
"You have a terrible poker face, Draco," Blaise says, lowering his hand. "I fold."
"A what?" Draco asks, furrowing his brows. "I didn't realise that you needed a certain face to play this game."
"It's a game of bluffing," Blaise says, leaning back and rolling his eyes. "You obviously have a good hand. You want people to raise so you can get—"
"I raise," Theo says, interrupting Blaise and putting two Galleons in the middle.
Draco shrugs and adds in two. "I raise." He narrows his eyes at Theo. There's no way he can beat Draco. Two aces.
"I'll call," Theo says, glancing at Blaise. Blaise raises his eyebrows as Theo places a single Galleon in the middle.
"Pass," Draco says, his eyes still narrowed at Theo.
"Fold or check?" Blaise asks. Draco shrugs. He has no idea what either of those means. "You check," Blaise decides. "Reveal your hand."
A smirk on his face, Draco reveals his two aces. Blaise snorts.
"Royal flush," Theo says, his voice quiet.
"What the hell does that mean?" Draco asks, glancing at Theo's cards—an ace, a king, a queen, a jack, and a ten.
"Theo wins," Blaise says with a smirk.
"Wait," Draco says, frowning. "Let's play again; I'll win, I swear."
Blaise looks over Draco for a second before shrugging. "I'll deal."
Draco glares at Theo. He'll win this time. That was just a fluke.
