Her Answer
"Isn't the sky beautiful?"
Smiling, Aang hugged his girlfriend the tiniest bit closer as Katara rested her head on his shoulder. Swinging his feet over the drop off point of the Western Air Temple, Aang could completely agree with her words. The sky was a nice shade of blue that reminded him of Katara's eyes and wispy clouds floated across it in packs, taking their time in crossing the great expanse.
In short, it was perfect for flying.
But not today. Today…Aang had something else to do.
"Yes…" Aang reached down to quickly peck Katara on the lips, an action he did as often as he could—if only to remind himself that after all this time, she was finally hers, and had been for nearly six years now. "But not nearly as beautiful as you."
Katara blushed, and attempted to avoid his amused gaze. "Aang…" She muttered, "You know that's not true."
"Oh, you're right," he agreed, "It's not." Katara's mouth dropped open in indignation, and Aang hurried on, "Beautiful isn't really enough to describe you…maybe gorgeous? Or breathtaking?"
Katara was blushing again. Aang found great pleasure in the fact that he could cause it. "Don't say things like that, Aang," she scolded gently. "You'll spoil me, and you know when we see Zuko he'll—"
"You're always beautiful, whatever he says," Aang interrupted, pulling Katara up with him as he stood. "I'll have to remember to talk to him about that when I get there," Aang said under his breath. Zuko would most certainly be going down.
"I love you, Aang," Katara said quietly, throwing her arms around Aang and hugging him tightly. "And I will always be here for you…even if my brother's cynicism somehow manages to rub off on us."
Smiling, Aang embraced her tightly back. Now was the time, he knew—the perfect time.
Yes. Kicking Zuko and now, perhaps, Sokka's butts would come later.
But right now…
Aang had a question to ask.
Taking a deep breath, the Avatar dropped down on one knee, Katara's mouth dropping open with him. "Katara," he began, his heart thudding so loudly in his ears he was sure she must be using her bloodbending, "When you agreed to come visit my at the Western Air Temple for a few weeks, I was already planning something…something big."
Aang swallowed. "You've helped me through so much," he continued, softly, "that I always feel like I'm not giving enough back to you."
"Aang," Katara interrupted, frowning, "If that's what this is about, then—"
"No," Aang cut her off, gazing at Katara with a certain light in his eyes. "It's not. Because, Katara…"
He took a deep breath. In, out, in, out.
"I love you," Aang said honestly, "and I want to spend the rest of my life with you, every moment." Smiling almost shyly, he brought out the carved Water Tribe necklace he'd hidden in his robes, Katara letting out a gasp as he did so. "That's what this is for.
"Katara…" Aang stared up into her face, eyes wide, cheeks slightly flushed, and her mouth curved up in what would soon become a loving and euphoric smile. "Will you marry me?"
It was the moment that she kissed him Aang somehow knew he had his answer.
