The silence in the car in unpalatable and only slightly disturbed by the splattering of rain drops across the windshield. The windshield
wipers squeak back and forth as both Dean and Castiel face straight ahead at the long stretch of road. One would think they were ignoring each other by their tense posture and refusal to bring their eyes away from the passing scenery, and one would be right.
It wasn't until Dean reached toward the dashboard to turn on the radio that Castiel's demeanor changes. He shifts in his seat and stares pointedly at Dean.
Dean notices. "What? I can't even listen to music in my own damn car now?"
"You can do whatever you want."
"That's a first," Dean huffs.
"Why do you insist on arguing with me? It's so fucking tiring,"
"Hey, buddy, I'm not the one who is trying to control things that are out of my reach and have no business involving myself with. That's all you."
"I have a strange feeling we're not talking about the car anymore." Castiel shakes his head and looks out his window. "Stop the car."
Dean takes a quick incredulous glance at Castiel. "What? Right now?"
"No, in a week- yes, right now," Castiel exasperates.
Dean rubs his hand across his face, visibly exhausted, and sighs. "Want to tell me why the hell you want me to stop the car?"
"I need to feel the rain." Castiel's eyes linger on the rain drops that are stuck to his window and can feel when Dean turns to look at him.
"We're in the middle of a thunderstorm and you wanna stop and feel the rain?"
"I need to feel something real." Dean becomes fully aware of where this is going.
He finally relents and pulls over to the side of the road. As he shuts the engine off, Castiel begins to speak again, "You and me. What we have going on right now is not real. And we have to stop pretending it is."
"Why not? It used to be."
Dean can admit that things aren't going the way they planned when they were younger, foolish, and deeply in love. He won't deny it but that doesn't mean he won't fight for it back.
Short drabble I needed to get out and wouldn't leave me alone. Feedback is appreciated.
