CH1

It was an early Monday morning as Julia slowly woke to the smell of fresh bread. She got up from her bed, got dressed, combed her long black hair, and headed downstairs. As she slowly peeked around the kitchen corner, she saw her mother kneading bread. Julia snuck quietly behind her mother, and gave her a surprise good morning kiss on the cheek.

"Good morning mom!" She said right after she gave her mother the kiss.

"Good morning." Her mother said jumping a little from the kiss.

"The bread smells amazing! I'm so hungry." Julia said rubbing her stomach.

"Well you are just going to have to wait because I need you to pick up some eggs and potatoes at the market for me."

Julia moaned and started heading to the door.

"How much do you need?" Julia asked as she put on a sweater.

"Hmmm, a dozen of eggs and a bag of potatoes should be fine right?" Her mother questioned.

"Yeah that's fine. I'll be back later." Julia stated and walked out the door.

She shut the front door behind her and headed down the street to the market. The streets were filled with people shopping and dozens of vendors selling their merchandise. As she was checking different vendors for the food she needed, she saw a little boy sitting on the corner of the street. He looked like he hadn't had a bath in weeks and was tossing little pebbles across the street. She started to walk over to him but stopped when a man handed the boy a loaf of bread and sat next to him. The man wore dark brown trousers and a nice cream colored shirt. His short black hair was nicely groomed and so was his slight facial hair under his nose and bottom lip.

As she suddenly snapped out of her trance like state, she continued her search for eggs and potatoes. She approached an old man who was selling fresh produce and spotted some potatoes.

"Excuse me, how much are your potatoes? I need a bag." She asked the old man.

"Only a dollar." He replied with a smile on his face.

"I'll take one thank you. Do you have any eggs?"

"Yes I do. How many would you like? He replied

"A dozen please." She smiled.

The old man got up and went to go get the eggs from a crate. As he disappeared behind a little shack, Julia peered over to where she saw the man give the boy bread. They boy was still sitting there eating his bread but the man was gone.

"I wonder where he went." She thought to herself.

"Here you go young lady!" The man said as he held a little box.

Julia jumped and chuckled of embarrassment.

"Thank you!" She said as she took the box and gave him money.

As she started to walk over to the little boy, she pulled out her pocket watch to check the time. Her eyes widened when she read Nine O'clock. She turned around quickly to head back to her house and BAM!

"OH!" Julia said in surprise as she bumped into a figure. "Oh no!"

The eggs crashed to the floor and were crushed by the sack of potatoes. She picked up the potatoes and started to pick out the good eggs.

"I am terribly sorry! Let me help you clean this up." Said the figure bending down to help her clean up the mess.

As Julia slowly looked up to see the one who started to help her, she noticed it was the man who helped the little boy.

"I should have paid more attention to where I was going. I apologize." The man said as they both stood back up.

"No it was my fault. I was in too much of a hurry." She said in reply.

Their eyes met automatically and they stood there for what seemed to be forever.

"I…I have to go." Julia said as she tore her eyes away from his and walked around him in a quick manner.

"Wait! I would like to get you some more eggs! As an apology. Please! It's the least I can do." He said as he quickly walked in front of her making her stop in her tracks.

She stood there for a moment and then spoke.

"Thank you. You are very kind." She said with a little smile on her face.

The man sighed and then smiled. They both walked over to the vendor with the old man who sold eggs.

"Can I get eight eggs please?" The man said.

The old man glanced at the box of eggs that he was holding. The box was all beat up and had some raw egg splattered on it. Then he looked at Julia with a smile on his face.

"We had a bit of an accident." Julia said with a smile and a small chuckle.

The old man smiled at her and went to go retrieve some eggs from the small shack. Right as he left, the man turned to Julia and gave her a little smile.

"I think he likes you." The man said with a raised eyebrow and a smirk.

Julia chuckled and tucked some loose hairs behind her hear. The old man came back and put the eggs in the box. Just as the man put his hand in his pocket to pay for the eggs, the old man reached behind him and pulled out some small blue flowers and handed them to Julia.

"You look just like your mother." The old man said with a smile on his face.

The man held out coins to pay for the eggs, but the old man put a hand over it and said that it's not a problem.

"Thank you." Julia said, giving the old man a kiss on the cheek.

The old man smiled so bit, it seemed to light up the street.

"Have a good day you two. And tell your mother I said hi."

"I will! And you too." Julia replied smiling.

She took the box of eggs and started heading down the street to her house. The nice man caught up to her and broke the silence that was in the quiet street.

"You sure know how to make someone's day."

"So do you. I saw you give food to someone who needed it and then offer to buy me eggs." She replied.

"I guess you're right." He said as he walked in front of her once more. "Let me help you." He said as he took the sack of potatoes from her arms. "Where are you heading to?"

"Just around the corner." She replied as she continued to walk.

They walked through the market together for a while enjoying the people and the nice weather.

"You don't look like you are from around here." She said breaking the silence between them.

"Why do you say that?"

"Well you are wearing pretty nice clothing and I haven't seen you around here before."

"You caught me." He said chuckling. "I am actually a traveler. When I was younger, I wanted to travel the world and see what amazing things it has to offer."

"I've always wanted to travel. I didn't have time to go anywhere because I was studying in school."

"Ah I see. What are you studying?"

"I studied a bunch of subjects. History, Mathematics, Science, Geography, psychology, and music."

"Wow you know everything."

"Not everything." She said chuckling.

They finally left the market and headed back to her house.

"So what is your name?" He asked.

"Julia."

He stopped in front of her, did a little bow, and held his hand out. She extended hers and he took it then raised it up to his lips.

"Pleased to meet you Julia. I am Luke." He said with a nice smile on his face.

She smiled and he released her hand.

"It is nice to meet you too Luke."

She reached into her pocket and realized that her pocket watch was gone.

"Oh no. My pocket watch is gone. I must have dropped it in the market." She said turning to face the market. "My mother will be worried if I don't get home soon."

"Don't worry I will find it for you. You go home though. I will bring it to you." He said in response.

"Thank you so much!" She said in a relieved tone. "I live in that house over there with the crimson door."

Luke smiled and nodded, then handed her the box of eggs and headed to the market. Julia got back to her house and peered stealthily in the kitchen. When she didn't see her mother there, she set the eggs down on the table and started washing potatoes.

"That took a while." Her mother said walking up behind Julia.

"Sorry I ran into some trouble." She said smiling. "Oh! The old man in the market told me to tell you hi."

"That was nice of him." Her mother replied. "Did he give you those?" She pointed to the front table.

They both smiled and continued their day. While Julia was reading a book in the front room, Luke was roaming the market for the lost pocket watch.

"This is nearly impossible!" He said laughing to himself. "I feel like I have been here seven times."

When he sat down on the curb, the little boy from earlier ran up to him and tugged on his shirt.

"I saw that pretty lady drop it this morning!" The boy said holding out his fist.

He handed the watch to Luke and then ran away giggling. Luke sat there and held it up with a sigh of relief. The sun started to go down right as he spotted Julia's house. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the watch. Just as he was about to hit the door with his knuckle, the window on the top floor opened. He looked up and smiled.

"Hello miss Julia." He said in a velvet voice.

Julia looked out the window and smiled. "Luke! I will be right down."

She ran down the stairs and opened the front door. They both smiled and Luke held up the watch. She took it just as her mother walked up behind her.

"Well who is this?" She asked with a smile on her face.

"Oh mom, this is Luke. We bumped into each other at the market this morning."

"Nice to meet you ma'am." Luke said holding his hand out.

Luke and her mother exchanged a few smiles and a hand shake. She then walked away up the stairs out of sight.

"I hope to see you again." He said looking into Julia's eyes.

She smiled and then averted her eyes to the ground. A blush crawled to her cheeks and they both fell silent.

"It was nice meeting you." He said breaking it.

He extended his hand and Julia put hers in his. He raised her hand to his lips and kissed it one last time.

"Goodbye." He said backing away from the door with a smile.

"Goodbye."

She closed the door and leaned her forehead against it with a smile. She then walked up to her bedroom. As she finished getting ready for bed, she snuggled under her blankets and got comfortable. The sound of crickets chirping outside filled every crack and crevice in the room and the moonlight shone through her window lighting up a picture on the wall. She stared at the picture and smiled wondering what life would be like if her father were still there. It took her about an hour to fall asleep, but when she did, it was the best she had ever slept in weeks.
