A/N: Just something I came up with when I was watching Torchwood: Miracle Day. Hope you like it!
Death on Miracle Day
From the moment Jack Harkness' blood was given to The Blessing, Death and his Reapers could not retrieve any of the souls to pass on to the afterlife. In fact, none of them could reach any human, only other living beings. Only Jack Harkness, who became mortal while all the other humans became immortal. He had frowned upon the Family Guy episode where he was shown to be injured, thus no longer able to retrieve souls. Some humans clearly did not understand the major consequences that came with not being able to die. It was no laughing matter, as they would find out.
Whenever Jack died, Death would momentarily retrieve his soul from the body while it recovered itself. Sometimes he did not need to, as the body quickly repaired itself. Other times, Jack would stay and chat with Death. The two of them had become good friends, along with a few other creatures (and humans) that would momentarily stop by before returning to the plane of the living. But when The Blessing made the other humans immortal with Jack's blood, it did not give the same temporary relief for the soul when the body repaired itself. Instead, they stayed in the body and the body did not repair itself. Well, at least cancer was no longer much of a problem, since those cells became mortal...
During the time of the Miracle, many humans used the sudden immortality to their advantage. They would put others through much suffering and agony, and infants who were to be miscarried would be put through pain that could have been avoided. It pained Death that he could not ease the suffering of the humans. He could hear the crying of the souls, their vessels damaged beyond repair. He was disgusted by the fact that the Three Families put their kin through so much pain, all for the gain of money.
The Doctor was nowhere to be found, for he was helping other planets. Death was fond of the Doctor, for he would give Death less innocent souls. Death did not like the unnecessary sacrifices that are made, and the Doctor would always prevent it. Now Death relied on Jack to stop the Miracle, as the humans dubbed it. Sure, Jack was more aggressive then the Doctor was, but at least he would get the job done.
When Jack was poisoned, Death felt slight anxiousness. He knew that it was Jack's now mortal blood that was need to reverse the effects of the Miracle. It was a relief that they managed to find the cure and concoct it with only the things that were available to them on the plane. So clever, these humans.
Everything that kept the humans quite steady had begun to collapse. With no death, there could be no life insurance. The humans as a species began to suffer: overpopulation, major food shortages. Death's brothers prospered during this time, showing that Death really was the good guy of the four.
Death was further disgusted by the fact that the humans decided to burn the bodies of those who were beyond healing. The screams rang through him, begging to be released from the pain. But the barrier created by the Blessing that stopped Death and his Reapers from retrieving souls was too strong.
The only human soul that could be retrieved was that of Angelo Colasanto, for the bed he lay in as he was dying happened to be over a null field, rendering the effects of the Miracle useless. Death himself retrieved Angelo's soul, and knew that Jack and his team were getting closer to reversing the Miracle.
As soon as Jack's mortal blood was given to both ends of the Blessing, Death and his Reapers were exceptionally busy. He was at ease, knowing that he no longer needed to listen to the endless screaming, crying and begging for release. Death was also relieved that the entrances to the Blessing were destroyed, so that no one would ever do another Miracle again.
