Caroline remained silent as Stefan threw the chessboard and flipped the table. She kept her eyes on floor when he pushed items off a nearby shelf and proceeded to punch a hole in the wall. She couldn't look at him, not because his actions were frightening her, but because of the pain she had caused by telling him the truth.
Stefan pounded his fits on the wall helplessly before breaking down in tears. All of the fight inside of him was gone, replaced by sadness and disappointment. He felt her presence, to his surprise she had stayed, but he was too ashamed to face her.
The silence seemed to go on for hours, they were each too afraid to speak first. Stefan was the first one to move. He slowly turned around, eyes full of sadness, he spoke. "I actually thought I could trust them. I'm my delusional mind I thought maybe this time would be different."
"Stefan," Caroline said standing up. "you are an amazing guy, and if Elena wants to give all of this up then that's her loss. And I know that's what everyone says in these situations, but you don't know how true it is."
Stefan just shook his head, letting the last few tears fall from his eyes. Caroline had to resist the urge to reach up and wipe them away.
"I can't be here right now." Stefan said.
"Then stay with me." Caroline offered. "Stay a night, a week, a year. Whatever you need. My door is always open for you."
Stefan nodded. "I'll get a few things together and be over in about an hour."
Caroline heard Stefan's car pulling into her driveway exactly one hour later. She met him at the door and smiled brightly when he walked in. She wanted to help him forget about Damon and Elena.
"So, I ordered pizza and thought we could watch a movie. I'll even let you choose." Caroline said.
Stefan forced a smile, he knew Caroline well enough to know that letting him have control over the movie they watch was a big deal. He didn't have the heart to tell her that he wasn't in the mood to watch a movie, so he picked out the least romantic one from her collection and ate a few slices of pizza.
Caroline took a seat in the chair while Stefan stretched out on the couch. Halfway through the movie Caroline glanced over to see Stefan, fast asleep. She grabbed the blanket from the back of the chair and gently covered him. He looked so peaceful. As hard as she tried, Caroline couldn't figure out why Elena would want to lose him.
