The Morning After

"Jennifer. Jennifer."
Sixteen year old Jennifer Lindley slowly opened her eyes and looked up at the gentle expression on her grandmother's face.
"I know last night was very difficult for you, but staying in bed all day is not going to make you feel any better." Grams said soothingly. Then, looking at her granddaughter's puzzled face, Grams realized that she hadn't been awake long enough yet to remember the events of the previous night.
"Your friend Abigail. There was an accident. Do you remember?"
Jen nodded slowly at the agonizing memory of what had happened to her best friend, Abby Morgan, when the two of them had gotten drunk the night before and she had fallen into the creek.
"She's dead." Jen whispered tearfully. Grams took Jen in her arms and tenderly rocked her back and forth.
"Abigail's mother called. She hasn't yet arranged the exact date of the funeral, but she would like you to be there. In the mean time, I think you should go to school." Grams said, running her fingers through Jen's short blonde hair.
"I can't face anyone. Not today. Let me stay home. Please." A grieving Jen pleaded with her grandmother.
"You need a distraction. Sitting at home all day with nothing to think about but the pain won't do you any good."
"Neither will being surronded by reminders of Abby."
"Everwhere and everything will remind you of her Jennifer. She was your best friend, and she will always hold a special place in your memory."
Jen looked up at Grams with tear filled eyes. "Will it always hurt this much?"
"I would be lying if I told you that the hurt will completely go with time. However, I can promise you that the pain will fade. You have my word on that."
Grams and Jen sat in silence for a while as tears began to spill from Jen's eyes.
"I'll go and make us some coffee." Was all Grams said as she tenderly kissed her granddaughter's forehead and then stood up to go.
Once her grandmother had left the room, Jen laid back down and let the warm salty tears roll down
her pale cheeks.
She didn't care if she went to school with puffy red eyes. All she cared about was Abby. She didn't want to believe that her best friend in the world was really gone. She knew it was naive of her, but she kind of hoped that if she didn't believe it, then it wouldn't be true. It couldn't be true.
She would miss Abby too much. She loved her too much.
