Thunk.

The sound was followed by a yelp and a whimper.

Sokka paused, tossing his boomerang up in the air and catching it again by the handle. His eyebrows knitted together in concern as he made his way through the trees to find his nephew sitting on a rock, clutching his foot with tears streaming down his face.

"Bumi?"

"Uncle Sokka!" The small child jumped and frantically tried to wipe the tears off of his face.

"What's wrong buddy?" Sokka knelt down next to his nephew, putting an arm around his shoulders, tucking his boomerang into his belt.

"Nothing." Bumi averted his eyes.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"No."

"So tell me."

Bumi hesitated for a moment before looking at his Uncle with watery eyes. "Kya is a waterbender, and mom is teaching her all of these cool moves and how to heal. And Tenzin is an airbender, one of the only two in the world. They're both so amazing, and I'm not. I can't even heal my foot." He gestured at his feet, where blood was tricking around one of his little brown sandals.

"What did you do to your foot?"

"I kicked the rock."

"Because you can't bend?"

Bumi nodded, biting his lip and looking at the ground.

"I can't bend. And neither can your Aunt Suki."

"I know, but your father wasn't the Avatar!" Bumi lashed out.

"My best friend is the Avatar, and my other best friend is the greatest Earthbender in the world. MY sister is the a Master Healer and waterbender. It was hard, but I didn't let it get me down. You can't either. Tell you what. Go home and have your mother heal your foot and come back out to this spot tomorrow morning and I'll have a surprise for you."

Bumi raised his eyebrow before he gripped his Uncle's shoulder and stood.

"Can you make it home on that?" Sokka asked as his nephew tested putting weight on his foot.

"Yeah, I'll be okay."

"Tomorrow then."

"What the heck is that?" Bumi asked as his Uncle came into view.

"Shh." Sokka was focused on what he was carving.

"Uncle Sokka-"

"Shhh."

"But-"

"Sh."

Bumi fell to the ground crossing his arms and huffing, watching his Uncle carefully. Sokka noticed his gaze and turned away from him. Bumi pouted, plucking the blades of grass out of the dirt and throwing them into a pile.

"All done!" Sokka held his creation in the air victoriously.

"What is that?"

"A boomerang. Just like mine." Sokka handed the small wooden boomerang to Bumi who ran his fingers over it. "And someday, when you're old enough you can learn to master more dangerous weapons as well. You don't need bending to be strong Bumi."

Bumi let his Uncle's words sink in for a moment, before he tossed the boomerang. It flew back towards him and he stretched out his little hand catching it in his fingers.

"That was great! I didn't catch a boomerang on my first try!" Sokka cheered and a smile spread across Bumi's face.

"Thank you Uncle Sokka."

"No problem buddy."

I hope you liked it!
