A War of Unmatched Ferocity

"The most powerful weapon...is the human soul on fire."-Marshal Ferdinand Foch, Allied World War I commander

"Let us, therefore, brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves...[if we] last for a thousand years, men [and women] will still say, 'This was their finest hour.' "

-Sir Winston Churchill

This is a tale you humans have passed through uncounted generations...

It tells of a war of unmatched ferocity, the likes of which would never be seen again.

One dark, fateful day the earth cracked open, and malevolent forces rushed forth from the fissure.

They mounted a brutal assualt upon the Surface people, driving the land into deep despair.

They burnt forest to ash, choked the land's sweet springs, and murdered without hesitation.

Lead by the Demon King, they did this in their lust to take the Ultimate Power guarded by Her Grace, the Goddess, Hylia.

The power She guarded was without equal.

Handed down by gods of old, this power gave the holder the means to make any desire a reality.

Such was the might of the Ultimate Power, the old ones placed it in the hands of Her Grace, the Goddess to protect.

To prevent this great power from falling into the hands of the evil swarming the lands...

The Goddess gathered the surviving humans on an outcropping of earth.

She sent it skyward, beyond the reach of the demonic hordes. Beyond the clouds.

With the humans safe, the Goddess joined forces with the Surface tribes, and fought the demons, sealing them away.

At last peace was restored to the Surface.

This is a tale that you humans have told for many generations...

But there are other legends intertwined with this tale, hidden from human memory.

Now a new legend, bound to this tale will begin to unfold.

One to be forged by Her Grace...

Impa's journal

From when the world was, was the Triforce. It held no distinction between good and evil. Many sought it's powers for good, and others for evil. Because good cannot exist without evil, the Golden Goddesses feared the rise of an incarnation of their eternal nemesis, the Demon King. Because of the Triforce's God-like powers, they entrusted it's keeping to Hylia, Nayru's confidant, and sister.

Then the darkness awoke. The ground cracked open, and out raced Demise's forces. Outnumbered, the humans' defeat seemed all but certain. In desperation, they released Link from his imprisonment and the Queen prepared to launch an all-out assault to protect her people.

Hylia descended and took charge of the operation. A seven-day war ensued and vast numbers of humans and demons fell in battle. Hylia sent the remaining humans and their Queen to the heavens, and took on Demise directly with the remainder of the Surface tribes. Demise was defeated, his legions largely destroyed, and he was sealed away.

In Her Grace's last days, she sensed something was wrong and sent me, Impa to the future to stop it. But I was already too late…...

Nayru's Musings

War is a cruel way to solve problems. It changes men and women and the landscape around them. Piece by piece, you are washed away as in a stream as a new person emerges. Often older, more mature, with the loss of innocence. It truly is a refiner's fire, bringing out the worst and the best. But there always is a danger in war: when you lose who you are completely. It can turn some inwards, some outward, and it can turn some men (and women) cruel.

If you are new to Hylia's Adventure there is a Chapter Summaries page that can get you up to speed if you don't desire to read 40,000 words. Then skip to the chapter Groose of All Blunders. I also have a new story in developement that should be published within a few hours. Feel free to look at that also.
